Type Cards

  10 Lots

Lot 82.  Extremely rare 1924 Oakland Tribune card of Walter Johnson. Measured 4 3/4 x 3 1/4" and is blank backed. Attractive card shows Johnson in pitching motion. The Senators were World Series Champs in 1924 which may partially account for the card. The Standard Catalog suggests that Johnson was considering buying the Oakland Club of the PCL at that time. A different card of Johnson was issued by the Tribune 1925. Research could only provide me with one other known copy of the card and noted PCL collectors have never seen it. One of the rarest types we've ever offered and in ex-mt condition.
Winning Bid $5,576.

Lot 83.  H-unc. Rare unknown type for Shirley President Suspenders from apparent set of 6 cards meant for retailers. The front of the early 20th Century large card (13 1/4" x 8 1/2" shows a woman batting in uniform wearing suspenders with a very attractive baseball field background. The rear of the card lists 6 possible sports subjects. The back also carries a message for retailers "Don't give these pictures away - sell them at 25 cents each and keep the money." The cards were packed, one to a box of six suspenders, very reminiscent of Boston Garters. The manufacturer was C.A. Edgerton of Shirley, Mass. The card has chipping on the corners and a 1" tear in the left side.
Winning Bid $550.

Lot 84.  E92 John McGraw with a Menagarie Gum back. Graded 30 GOOD 2 by SGC. It is assumed the card is a Dockman because of the connection with Menagarie Gum which would be the only way to conclude that. One of the most interesting of the wrong back cards. Included is a real Dockman Menagarie Gum card, not easy to find in itself.
Winning Bid $533.

Lot 85.  1910 W-unc. Strip card Cobb, Detroit. This rare issue is check listed on page 515 of the 2005 SCD Standard Catalog. Little is known about the issue and it's very rarely seen. The Ty Cobb shows some wear and is in excellent condition.
Winning Bid $977.

Lot 86.  1915 W-unc Joe Jackson. This very rare issue is check listed on page 515 of the 2005 SCD Standard Catalog, where it lists for $6,500 . While these are called strip cards, they do not appear to be that. A candy card is a possibility. The Jackson measures 2 3/4" x 1 11/16" and is in good condition.
Winning Bid $4,183.

Lot 87.  1911-2 Stevens Forearms Advertising card featuring Home Run Baker. 6 1/8" x 3 1/2 blotter shows Home Run Baker and advertises Stevens Firearms. It is part of a set with at least 4 known Athletic players after their 1911 World Series win. Unique item has a vertical crease and a corner crease. The back is clean and unused. Rare!
Winning Bid $433.

Lot 88.  T206 White Border Vic Willis (batting). Good-very good card has rare Piedmont 350-460 , Factory 42 back.
Winning Bid $300.

Lot 89.  W-unc Extremely rare uncataloged Package design card of Oscar Stanage. The card, which is about 1 1/2" square is very similar in design to the well known W555 package design cards. Stanage was Detroit's catcher for the 12 year period of 1909 to 1920 and the card could be from any year in that period. There was one other card discovered with the Stanage, the identify for which is no longer available. The fair condition card has gray borders, a blank back and "Stanage" is written in white capital letters at the bottom.
Winning Bid $500.

Lot 90.  2 Hank Sauer Bread labels including a new discovery. The Bread for Energy Bread label is a well known and popular set. The Sauer from this set has a crease and a tiny stain but is in well above average condition for a bread label. The second is far more interesting and while obviously similar in appearance, has "TOP TASTE" at the top of the label instead of the expected "Bread for Energy". First one of this type I've ever seen. There are some wrinkles and a thin paper area which can be seen from the back.
Winning Bid $491.

Lot 91.  Four very rare self develop tiny cards believed to be 1956 Parkhurst. The cards measure approximately 1 1/4" square and feature Oscar Judd, Del Bisonette, Alf Porto and Max Peterson, all of the Maple Leafs. The backs indicate neatly in capital letters "A Toronto Maple Leaf Star Send This Picture and 10 cents to Address on Box & receive a 5 x 7 enlargement" The assumption follows that the cards were inside a box. Assumed to be from the 1950's, good photo quality and about excellent and very rare.
Winning Bid $888.
