Lot 18.  1878 Buffalo Trade Card. Most unusual card and very rare. The 5 3/8" x 3" green trade card has a 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" actual team photo affixed showing 11 players of the Buffalo team. The Buffalo team in 1878 were minor league, but were one of the best minor league teams in history. They were led by 22 year old James "Pud" Galvin, who would become a Hall of Fame Pitcher. Galvin and teammates Bill McGunnigle (later to become the Brooklyn manager), Davy Force and Dave Eggler (who both dated back to the first year of the National Association) and Bill Crowley. Buffalo was International League Champions is 1878 and were so impressive they were accepted into the National League in 1879 and were a force in baseball until the late eighties. The photo on the card identifies the players by numbers to a key, which is below the picture. The numbers in some cases are faded and in some cases are hard to read. The balance of the front of the card which carries ads for a tailor and for boots and shoes is in excellent condition. The back has some album remnants and paper loss.
Minimum Bid $2,000.

Interestingly the address of the Gray Studio is given as Boston, which was a N.L. city Glasscock didn't play in. The pose is one of the four known poses of Glasscock used in the N172 Old Judge Series. The card is in magnificent condition, except for a tiny spot at the upper left of the photo portion, where a corner fell off. The back is clean.
