Lot 1.  1877 Lowell Baseball Club - A book of Cabinet photographs. An astounding book, which I believe has never been offered at auction before and only one other copy is alleged to exist. The volume shows pages, which must be described as cabinet photos with cabinet card size and thickness. There are 11 photos in all, of Lowell Club players including Samuel Wright (brother of Harry and George), Alonzo Knight, Charles Foley, Dennis Sullivan, Samuel Crane, A.W. Whitney, John Piggott, William Hawes, Frank Whitney, Revilo Cook and Eugene Stoughton. Each page is 5 3/4" x 7 7/8" with the actual photos measuring 4" x 5 5/8", positioned on a page with a gold border surrounding the picture and a thin black line border around that. Each player has his name and position pre-printed on the page below the gold leaf frame line. The spine needs some minor repair, but otherwise the book is in excellent condition. Recently a CDV has appeared showing the exact same 11 portraits in the book. A remarkable volume which will become the cornerstone of any advanced baseball book or photo collection.
Winning Bid $11,000.

Lot 2.  Exhibit Supply Co. 1923-4 complete set of 58 including the nearly impossible Ruth. Unquestionably the toughest of all the exhibit sets. Would be the most difficult exhibit set known even without the Ruth card. With the Ruth it becomes one of the most difficult sets in the hobby surpassing the E90-1 and even T206 with the Wagner. The pose is identical to the very common 1921 Ruth except a white border was added. Extensive research could only find five copies of the Ruth in existence, including the one in the set here (please see our article on Exhibits and the Ruth card from the 1923 set elsewhere in the catalog). I've only seen the 1923 Ruth Exhibit offered at auction three times. Once by Lelands in a large lot of exhibits in the 1980's, in our November 2003 auction, when it went for $13,783 and in our April 2006 auction when the same card from 2003 sold for $3,993 with an unreached limit of $12,543. For more details on this research and the Ruth card please click on the Old Judge character on our web page or send an email. Condition is varied but overall a well above average set. Many cards have a small price lightly written in pencil (indicated by an * after the grade) and easily erased. Highlights: Ruth (a very good-excellent appearance on the front, the back had five spots of black album remains as well as a small spot of paper loss less than the size of a dime (see scan), Stengel (ex, *), Bottomley (vg, *), Hartnett (ex+, *), Gonzalez (ex+, *), Luque (ex, but "really Ivy Wingo" is written on the front and back., Sewell (ex, *), Simmons (vg, *) and McGraw (nr mt, *), The balance are uniformly excellent or better on the front however almost all have a pencil price mark on the back and some have more extensive writing. The Willie Kamm card is autographed.
Winning Bid $23,546.

Lot 3.  R318 Batter Up Set of 192 with wrapper and 4 High Grade SGC High numbers. Nicest Batter Up set I've ever seen. 50% ex-mt or better and 66% excellent or better. Many of the cards graded very good have been graded because of the tiny crease that is often found in the small area that connects the die cut portion to the top of the card. Highlights: 3-Lopez (ex+-mt), 5-Hubbell (ex-mt), 6-Terry (nr mt, short), 8-Bottomley (vg-ex), 10-Ferrell (vg-ex), 14-Traynor (nr mt), 16-Hafey (ex), 17-L. Lot 4.  1880 Worcester Ruby Legs Postcards. Three historic and almost assuredly, one of a kind, postcards. The earliest known baseball postcards. drawn by a famous political cartoonist named F.E. Pollack during the 1880 season with apparently one card for many games of the Worcester team's first season in the National League. While it seems there should be others, the three cards offered are the only cards known to exist. Drawings of others are illustrated in an extremely rare book (I've never seen anything other than a xerox) called "Ups and Downs of the Worcester Baseball Club League Season 1880". The postcards measure 5 1/8" x 3", were all postally used, with a Worcester postmark (probably in 1880) and were all sent to a Miss E.M. Bacon in Albany New York.. The first game represented on the postcards was from May 27th. Worcester lost to Providence 4-1 and the card notes "... Tho' 4 games out of six, aint so bad after all", referring to the fact that Worcester, despite the loss, had won 4 of the 6 games with Providence to that point in the season. The second post card represents two games against Buffalo on June 4th and 5th. The card depicts a Buffalo and makes no comments. The final postcard was from June 10th and represents a 5-0 shutout win for Worcester against Cleveland. It is interesting to note the next game (on June 12th) was James Lee Richmond pitching the first perfect game in major league history for Worcester against Cleveland. The cards are in excellent condition. Included is a Xerox copy of the "Ups and Downs..." book (not certain it's complete) and a copy of the 1880 Worcester schedule with results and their roster. In addition to Richmond, the Worcester club had several prominent players highlighted by rookie Harry Stovey, Charlie Bennet, Al Buschong, Bill McGunnigle, Art Irwin and others. Originally in the collection of pioneer collector from Schenectady New York named Bill Knapp in the early 1980's.
Winning Bid $7,260.

Lot 9.  Very rarely offered 1928 Pacific Coast league near Set of 31. Only missing the Dudley Lee card (A xerox is provided). This was the only minor league issue of the Exhibit Supply Co featuring 32 cards representing the six teams in the Pacific Coast League. The cards are blue tinted and bear a striking resemblance to the major league set of blue exhibits issued in 1928. While several players played in the majors or were about to, most notable is the card of HOF'er to be Earl Averill (good). Other familiar names are Walter "Dusty" Mails (the Mails card game set, is elsewhere in this auction, excellent, pinhole), Jimmy Reese (ex), "Ping" Bodie (vg, pinhole), Smead Jolley (ex+-mt), and Lyn Lary (excellent, pinhole). 12 cards have a pinhole, most of these are excellent otherwise. 4 cards are excellent, 4 cards are very good and 3 cards are good. The Sheely and Twombley cards are very good-excellent and autographed in pencil. The Dittmar card has a chipped corner. We offered a set in our November 2004 Auction and it went for $13,784+.
Winning Bid $8,054.

Lot 10.  E285 Rittenhouse set of 52. A set you almost never see offered. Rittenhouse offered cards with a somewhat crude picture of a ballplayer with one of the letters that would spell "RITTENHOUSE CANDY COMPANY' on the back. A rarer back had a prize list on the reverse. The 52 cards would form a deck of cards on the front. 43 of the cards include a letter back and 7 have the prize back. It is commonly believed that Rittenhouse made some of the letters very difficult or nearly impossible to find to avoid having to give out many prizes. The subjects include 24 Hall of Famers, nearly half the set Highlighted by two Babe Ruths, one excellent +, the other vg, but short at top. Other Highlights include Bottomley (gd), Cronin (ex+), Cuyler (ex-mt), George Davis (ex-mt), Foxx (ex), 2Frisch (vg-ex, ex+), Grove (vg-ex), Hafey (vg-ex), Hartnett (ex-mt), Herman (ex+), Hornsby (ex+), Klein (vg-ex), Ott (vg-ex), Simmons (ex), Terry (vg), Traynor (vg), 2 L.
