Type Cards/Rarities

  5 Lots

Lot 47.  Two very rare Caramel Felts of Christy Mathewson & Nap Lajoie. The felts, which are not listed in either major price guide were listed in the "Stirling Sports Card Catalog" (1977) on page 10. The felts measure 1 1/2" x 3 7/8" and have a drawing of the player. Both are ex+-mt and are very rarely seen.
Winning Bid $2,077.

Lot 48.  Very rare barely known 1911 Type card of James Archer. One of three similar cards found in the 1980's. The card, which is very much in the style of the Sporting News cards, measures 3 3/8" x 1 7/8 and shows a black and white photo of Archer throwing with the caption "JAMES ARCHER Catcher - 1911 Chicago Nationals" in three lines. The rear has "A Picture Given with Every 5 CENTS In Trade at..." And then the words continuing the sentence "ANY Confectionery" in a purple rubber stamp. There is a similar rubber stamp to the left saying "National Circulation System DUBUQUE IOWA" .The card has a light stain to the upper right of the front and is otherwise excellent. As rare as it gets.
Winning Bid $5,704.

Lot 49.  T206 Ed Konetchy with Broadleaf 460 Back. SGC 10 POOR 1. Highly desired rare back from the 1911 460 Series. Unfortunately, heavy back damage (see scan), but clearly from the "460" series.
Winning Bid $605.

Lot 50.  D350-1 Standard Biscuit #12-Beals Becker. The connection between the M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News sets, the D350-1 Standard Biscuit, D329 Weil Baking and other advertisers using these checklists is well known. However there is no explaining the card of Beals Becker, which comes with a normal D350-1 Standard Biscuit back. The #12 in the D350-1 Standard Biscuit set is Zinn Beck, as it is in the Weil Baking and the M101-4 Sporting News. Number 12 in M101-5 is Lute Boone with Zinn Beck appearing as #11. The fact is Beals Becker does not appear in any of these sets. His 8 year career was over in 1915. To the best of my knowledge the offered Becker is the only one known although I've been told there may be another. The card has multiple creases and is fair.
Winning Bid $6,134.

Lot 51.  1926 Kut Out Miller Huggins. Extremely rare die cut cut featuring players from the New York Giants and N.Y. Yankees. The set appears to be a predecessor to the very similar and better known Middy Bread issue of 1927 which featured the two St. Louis teams. The Huggins card has 3 light wrinkles but appears excellent.
Winning Bid $1,075.
