Type Cards/Rarities

  9 Lots

Lot 29.  1888 M117 Sporting Times Scorecard with Doggie Miller of Pittsburgh. Sporting Times was a short lived newspaper from the late 1880’s. They issued 4 1/2” x 7 1/4” heavy paper cards of players of the era. Every card known, most of which are in the Spalding collection at the New York Public Library, appears to have the white border trimmed off. It’s probable they were issued that way.The only way to get a card with a white border is when it’s the cover of a scorecard. The offered scorecard showing Miller in one of his N172 Old Judge poses has pre-printed lineups for a game between the Union and Middlebury teams. It is lightly “scored”. The card is in excellent condition and there is a 1” separation at the centerfold. A “trimmed” M117 of Curtis Welch went for $6,275 in our November 207 auction.
Winning Bid $3,808.

Lot 30.  1904 Allegheny Game Card Fred Clarke Pittsburgh PSA 6 EX-MT. Probably a one-of-a-kind card from arguably the rarest set in the hobby. The card of the Pirate Hall of Famer and Manager looks near perfect except slight off centering.
Winning Bid $2,100.

Lot 31.  E104-2 Nadja Caramel Fred Clarke PSA 3 VG. The blank backed version of the E90-2 card. Centered slightly left, no creases and a fairly clean back.
Winning Bid $807.

Lot 32.  E125 American Caramel Die Cut Dots Miller PSA GOOD 2. Another extremely rare set with only four teams represented. The grade, while technically accurate because of two light creases in Miller’s lower legs, does not take into account how difficult to find E125’s in nice condition The Miller is as nice as one can hope for.
Winning Bid $1,418.

Lot 33.  E300 Plow's Candy Babe Adams PSA 5 EX. Tough rarely seen type card. A very solid excellent with a tiny touch of wear at two corners.
Winning Bid $1,418.

Lot 34.  Two 1916 D381 Fleishman with tabs, W.E. Alexander and Joe Gedeon. Two New York Yankee cards from an extremely rare set, whose rarity is multiplied greatly for cards with tabs. The card of Alexander has very light creasing and three two digit numbers written on the back. The Gedeon has no creasing but a tiny pinhole in the upper right.
Winning Bid $879.

Lot 35.  Uncataloged and unknown exhibit card of Elmer Smith. Elmer Smith’s major league career spanned the years 1914 when he came to Cleveland through 1925, his last year with Cincinnati. He played mostly with Cleveland through 1921, the first year of baseball exhibit cards. The card shows a picture of Smith batting with “Elmer Smith” in script and the most unusual wording “CLEVELAND B.B. PLAYER” below his name. Smith was only portrayed in one exhibit set, the 1922, which shows his team as Boston. Obviously the offered card is not from either the 1921 or 1922 exhibit sets. The script style shown on the card does not match any of the 1920 baseball exhibit sets. It is a complete mystery and the use of the wording “B.B. Players” creates the possibility it was part of a non-sports set. Over many years I’ve consulted with several serious exhibit collectors about the card and none have ever seen it. It may very well be one of a kind. The condition is poor to fair with multiple creases.
Minimum Bid $1,000.

Lot 36.  Three M101-4 style cards of Forest Cady including two rarties. The most common card in this group is a D350-1 Standard Biscuit card #25, which is essentially the same as a blank back M101-4. The card is fair. Second is a very rare M101-5 blank back Sporting News of #23 Cady. This is a comparatively new discovery as the much more common #23 in M101-5 set is Mordecai Brown. The Cady has some chipping at the top and is otherwise excellent (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5). The third card, which to the best of my knowledge is unknown, is an unnumbered card of Cady (SGC 40 VG 3).
Winning Bid $2,100.

Lot 37.  1934-6 R318 Batter Up Premium of Paul Waner. Noted on the flap of a Batter Up High number wrapper, largely unnoticed is the offer “ALL FOR 1 CENT
1. A Large Photo Art Picture
2. A Stand Up Action Picture....
3. A Big Chew of Quality Gum”
We know about the card and the gum, but not the “Large Photo Art Picture” - until now. Incredibly rare newly identified type premium card, which measures 5” x 8”, is on glossy thin stock and has a dark red or maroon color. The back is blank. The offered Waner is in nearly excellent condition but there are two minor creases in the upper left corner. I know of 3 others from this issue. They all show the exact same pose as on the R318 Batter Up card.
Winning Bid $1,331.
