  7 Lots

Lot 1.  T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back graded Authentic by SGC. One of the most prestigious and rarest cards in the hobby with about a dozen known. Considerably rarer than the legendary T206 Honus Wagner card. This card was originally found in a Ty Cobb Tobacco tin and it is my belief that is the way they were brought to the public, and were the only way they were distributed. The card has tiny spots of paper loss on the front including in the legend area at the bottom. The back has some light tobacco stains and a spot of paper loss beneath the word “World”.
Winning Bid $47,163.

Lot 2.  1887 Set of 18 Scrapps completely graded by SGC. Very rarely offered 19th Century set featuring 9 die cut cards each of the 1888 American Association Champion St. Louis Browns and N.L. Champion Detroit Tigers. The players are the starting lineups for each team. The condition of the Browns is outstanding. Not a crease to be seen and some light staining as is usual. The backs of the Browns have a piece of album page which has actually helped maintain the stability of the cards but has had the resulting grades by SGC much lower that would be expected from the appearance.  St. Louis Browns – Comiskey (Poor 1), Bushong (Poor 1), Caruthers (Poor 1), Foutz (Poor 1), Gleason (Poor 1), Latham (Poor 1), O’Neill ((Poor 1), Robinson (Poor 1), Welch (A); Detroit Tigers – Brouthers (GOOD 2), Dunlap (GOOD 2),  (GOOD 2), Richardson (FAIR 1.5), Rowe (FAIR 1.5), Thompson (A), White (A), Bennett (A), Getzein (A).
Winning Bid $3,000.

Lot 3.  N172 Goodwin Old Judge Spotted Tie SGC near set of 15 missing the Stephen Behel card. Seldom offered, the highlight of any Old Judge collection. Representing the 1886 New York Metropolitans of the American Association, the cards were among the first N172’s issued. The near set includes Stephen Brady (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Joe Crotty (SGC 60 EX 5), Ed Cushman (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Jim Donohue (SGC 50 VG/EX 4), Tom Forster (SGC 40 VG 3), Elmer Foster (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Frank Hankinson (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Bill Holbert (SGC 50 VG/EX 4), Jack Lynch (SGC A), Al Mays (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Tom McLaughlin (SGC 60 EX 5), Jack Nelson (SGC 40 VG 3), Dave Orr (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Charles “Ripslager” (SGC 50 VG/EX 4) and Chief Roseman (SGC 84 NM 7). The condition is overall very nice with one card a 7, two cards 5’s, 3 cards 4, 2 cards are 3, 6 cards are 1.5 and one is graded “A”. Most of the lower grades have been penalized greatly for glue remains on the rear. All the fronts and backs are shown in 4 scans. This may be the first time a near set of Spotted Ties has been offered at auction.
Winning Bid $28,492.

Lot 4.  1890 Joseph Hall Players League Composite Cabinet of the Brooklyn Club SGC 80 EX/NM 6. As nice a cabinet as you’ll ever see made by the famous Joseph Hall Studio of Brooklyn.  The Brooklyn team finished 2nd, 5 games behind Boston. Led by player-manager John Ward, other prominent players were George Van Haltren and Dave Orr. Seventeen players are illustrated and identified. The back is clean and blank.
Winning Bid $6,443.

Lot 5.  Complete SGC Graded set of 114 R321 Goudey Four-in-1 Puzzle Cards. One of the nicest sets in existence. Very rarely offered with all 114 cards and are usually collected and offered in sets of the 36 different fronts. All cards have either red or blue borders which makes finding high grade cards extremely difficult. This set was put together and upgraded over a period of many years and 70% of the cards are graded 5 (excellent) or better.  The grading breakdown is as follows: SGC 84 NM 7 (1 card), SGC 80 NM 6 (32 cards), SGC 70 EX+ 5.5 (12 cards), SGC 60 EX 5 (33 cards), SGC 50 VG/EX 4 (22 cards), SGC 40 VG 3 (8 cards), SGC 30 GD 2 (2 cards) and SGC 15 FAIR 1.5 (4 cards).  Highlights: 1-J Ruth-McManus-Brandt-Maranville (SGC 80 EX-MT 6), 3-A Ruth-McManus-Brandt-Maranville (SGC 60 EX-MT 5), 4-A Ruth-McManus-Brandt-Maranville (SGC 20 1.5), 5-A Ruth-McManus-Brandt-Maranville (SGC 70 EX-MT 5.5). Lot 7.  PC-Unc Collection of a near set of 22 1932 N.Y. Giant Schedule Post Cards including both Hubbells and original mailing envelope. Unusual and very difficult set showing an original photo of a Giant player with some biographical data and a Giant 1932 Home schedule on the back. Speculation is they were sent to season ticket holders and/or were handouts at the Giants ticket office or, based on the existence of this envelope (only one we’ve ever seen) were sent with mail order purchases of tickets. The only known missing player is Walker. Hall of Famers are two Carl Hubbells, Travis Jackson, Freddy Lindstrom, Mel Ott and Bill Terry. The explanation of 2 Hubbells is very simple. The cards are printed on different stocks of a paper and they are different. One is on a high quality white paper as is the rest of the set and this is the more difficult one. One is on a high rag content, course paper and was obviously used in a marketing campaign and is very common. The writing on the cards are different one says “10 minutes from NY side of George Washington Bridge”, the other says 15 minutes. The common one invites anyone to “Send stamped, self addressed envelope to Polo Grounds for picture of your favorite player”. The cheaper Hubbell is the only card which has a schedule at the top of the back when turned over. Contents and condition of the group follows: Ethan Allen (ex), Herman Bell (vg), Hughie Critz (ex, pencil mark), Fred Fitzsimmons (vg-ex), Chick Fullis )vg-ex), Sam Gibson (ex-mt), Francis Healey (should be Healy) (vg-ex), Frank Hogan (ex+), Carl Hubbell (2) (rare ex, common ex-mt), Travis Jackson(ex-mt), Len Koenecke (ex-mt), Sam Leslie (fair-good), Freddy Lindstrom (vg), Adolpho Luque (ex-mt), Clarence Mitchel (ex-mt), Jim Mooney (vg), Bob O'Farrell (vg), Mel Ott (ex), Roy Parmalee, (vg, pencil mark)  Bill Terry (vg-ex), Johnny Vergez (ex).
Winning Bid $29,582.
