  8 Lots

Lot 211.  A very rare accordion style panoramic onionskin Supplement from the Illustrated Sporting News dated 1905 featuring ten athletes from 9 sports including Napoleon Lajoie and Jack Chesbro. Each of the attached panels measure 4 3/18 x 7 ¼”and include Hildebrand (jockey), John Flanagan (Field), Holcombe Ward (tennis), H.L. Hillman (track), Lajoie (baseball, C.M. Daniels (swimming), Captain Hogan –Yale (football), Chesbro (baseball), H. Chandler Egan (golf) and Marcus Hurley (bicycling).  There are some minor defects as might be expected in a piece as fragile as this, but overall excellent condition. Possibly one of a kind.
Minimum Bid $1,000.

Lot 212.  1925 Champions Exhibit Advertising Display. The 1925 Champions exhibit set was the first issued featuring athletes other than baseball players. Called the “World’s Champions”, the set featured Babe Ruth but mostly consisted of Olympic athletes from around the world, but mostly the U.S.A. The offered  27” x 12 1/2’ advertising display is the only one I’ve ever seen. It features 20 slightly trimmed actual cards. Includes are Dempsey (lower left), a hockey player, and among the better known names, Johnny Weismuller, Ed “Stranger” Lewis, Gar Wood, Charles Paddock and Charles Jewtraw. A 1 3/4” strip has been pasted across the bottom four cards indicating “1c “ on each side with instructions in the middle. The display is professionally framed to 29” x 14 1/2”.
Minimum Bid $1,000.

Lot 213.  Very rare German 1932 Abdullah near set in the original album. Contains 198 (of 200) cards including extremely desirable 196-Babe Ruth and 200-Bobby Jones. Not to be confused with Sanella Margarine set which is abundant, the Abdullahs are genuinely rare.  Both the Jones and Ruth cards go for thousands of dollars each. The 198 cards are all pasted in their original album (also quite rare), which measures 9 1/2” x 13”. There are 25 pages with photos attached. Each page has 8 sepia 1 3/4” x 2 1/2” photos in specially notated spots. There are 5 American Track and Field stars, 4 American swimmers including Johnny Weismuller and Helene Madison, Charles Lindbergh and Bill Tilden. The balance are world wide athletes, the most recognizable of which is Sonja Henie. The Jones, Ruth, Tilden and Henie are on the same page. Aside from being glued in, the cards are almost all in mint condition. Knowing the 1932 date, it is assumed the cards could be soaked from the album if it were desired. The two missing subjects are 139-H. Fritsch and 199-Max Schmeling.
Winning Bid $1,500.

Lot 214.  1948 Exhibit Co. Set of 32 Champions in black and white. The original set issued in 1948 with 32 black and white cards. Winning Bid $1,100.

Lot 215.  1948 Exhibit Co. Set of 32 Champions in green tint. An identical set was produced with a green tint. Much more difficult (between 5 or 10 to 1) but only the most advanced exhibit collectors care because the checklist is the same. Highlights: Mikan (ex+), Baugh (ex), Cook (ex), Dempsey (nr mt), Durnan (ex), Graham (vg), Luckman (ex+-mt), Lujack (ex+-mt), Louis (vg-ex), McDermott (ex-mt), Turner (vg-ex), Van Buren (ex-mt), Doug & Max Bentley (ex-mt), Young (ex+-mt). Balance: 14 cards excellent or ex-mt, 4 cards very good.
Winning Bid $1,815.

Lot 216.  1949 Exhibit Co. Set of 32 Champions in blue tint. Far more difficult than the preceding 1948 set. There were 14 new “athletes issued, including a horse and a boat, and two pose changes.  These 14 cards are the most difficult cards to find over the two year issue and include 2 new basketball (Phillip and Fulks), 3 new football (Waterfield, Motley and Dobbs), one new Hockey (Roy Conacher) and one golf (Ben Hogan), which is one of the more desirable golf cards among collectors. As nice a set as you’re likely to see. Highlights: Hogan (nr mt), Mikan (ex+-mt), Fulks (ex+-mt), Phillips (ex+-mt), Conacher (nr mt), Dempsey (ex-mt), Dobbs (nr mt), Jacons (nr mt), Motley (nr-mt), Waterfield (nr mt), Baugh (nr mt), Graham (ex-mt), Harder (nr mt), Louis (ex+), Luckman (nr mt), Lujack (nr mt), Turner (nr mt), Van Buren (nr mt); Balance: 7 cards near mint, 6 cards excellent-mt, 1 cards excellent.
Winning Bid $3,900.

Lot 217.  1949 Blue Exhibit Bill Durnan mystery card SGC graded SGC 40 VG 3. Bill Durnan, Montreal Canadian goaltender, was issued as part of the 32 card Black and White Champions set. In 1949, the Exhibit Company replaced 12 subjects and changed the poses of two ice skaters, Dick Button and Barbara Scott. A checklist of the 32 blue tint 1949 cards is available on request but it does not include Bill Durnan, which has been recently discovered with a blue tint. None of the other 1948 Black and white cards that were not issued in 1949 have ever been seen with a blue tint. The offered Durnan card, with distinct blue tint, is the only one I have seen. It has been graded SGC 40 VG 3, apparently because of minor corner wear.
Winning Bid $1,000.
