Post Cards

  10 Lots

Lot 116.  1905 Real Photo Post Card of the Cleveland Indians by famous baseball photographer Louis Van Oeyen SGC 30 GOOD 2. Extremely rare card by one of baseball’s historic photographers. Shows 19 members of the team including Lajoie and Joss. Some flaking along the left side accounts for the grade.
Winning Bid $1,099.

Lot 117.  Circa 1906 Lawrence Semon post card of Ty Cobb SGC 20 FAIR 1.5. Very rare! A series of well done artistic drawings of ball players by a well known New York State artist named Lawrence Semon. The drawings are known as a series of New York Giant Newspaper supplements and a series of post cards. (See Lot 31). The black and white post cards can be found with or without the notation in red print “Sketched from Life By Lawrence Semon Cartoonist of The Evening Sun”. Not enough cards are known to determine if the cards with or without the red notation are rarer. They are more attractive. The card of Cobb, the key in the set, is unused and there is a 1 1/2” crease in the upper left corner. The back is blank except for “1915” being written in ink above Post Card at the top.
Winning Bid $2,600.

Lot 118.  ca 1910 Monarch Typewriter Chief Bender SGC 30 GOOD 2. Very rare group of postcards issued in 1911 featuring Philadelphia Athletics. Only one known of Bender. The card is unused clean and shows corner wear and a tiny smudge at the bottom of the card on the back. The grade is not explainable.
Winning Bid $750.

Lot 119.  PC Kraemer Art Palace of the Fans Stadium PC Honus Wagner SGC 50 VG/EX 4. Very popular and rare card showing Wagner bent over target in what obviously was a contest of some kind at the ballpark. The card appears to be unfairly graded as the corners are sharp, the back is perfectly clean and there are no visible flaws. The Kraemer Art Co. had some advertising pre-printed in the message section of the card and its possible the card was unreasonably downgraded for that, although the card is known to have been printed that way and is considered to be a rarer variation.
Winning Bid $550.

Lot 120.  ca. 1910 Real Photo postcard of Eddie Collins SGC 40 VG 3. Extremely rare uncataloged postcard from probable series of Philadelphia A’s. Shows Collins swinging in Baker Bowl. Card graded vg, but looks at least excellent. Unused with “ROTOX” designation around stamp area.
Winning Bid $660.

Lot 121.  ca 1910 uncataloged Panoramic postcard of Redland Field. Titles at top middle, “National League Base Ball Park, Cincinnati O. “ The card measures just shy of 11” x 3 1/2”,  is unused, and shows some creasing in the corners and some foxing. Grade would be good-very good or very good. Unlisted in Crabtree’s Baseball Stadium Postcard checklist book.
Winning Bid $500.

Lot 122.  1913 M101-3 Sporting News postcard set of 6 all graded by SGC. Only postcard set issued by the Sporting News. Includes Ty Cobb (SGC 30 Good 2), Johnson-Street (SGC 20 FAIR 1.5), Roger Bresnahan (SGC 50 VG/EX 4), Eddie Collins (SGC 50 VG/EX 4), Vean Greg (SGC 50 VG/EX 4) and Rube Marquard (SGC 50 VG/EX 4). The Cobb could have had a much better grade. It has no creases and a couple of hard to see spots. Scans of the backs of the postcards can be seen on our web page.
Winning Bid $3,808.

Lot 123.  1914 E & S “T.S.” Postcard of Jimmie Archer. Very rare postcard of the Cub catcher. Only ten others are known in the set. A detailed drawing surrounded by relevant cartoons pertaining to Archer’s career. Small spot of paper loss at the top of the card. The back is unusued and clean.
Winning Bid $300.

Lot 124.  1911 Max Rigot giant Panoramic Post Card of Comiskey Park. The card, which measures 24” long and 5” high, is one of about a half dozen similar post cards issued of that size including a companion piece by Rigot of the Cubs park. The scene shows a game in progress during the 1910 season from the stands beyond 3rd base. There is some light vertical creasing and a small scrape in the upper left hand corner. There is a pinhole in the upper right. Good-very good.
Winning Bid $300.

Lot 125.  Interesting group of 6 better postcards. Group includes 1. 1939 Orcajo team real photo postcard of Champion Cincinnati Reds (ex, with pencil notations on back). 2.
