Lot 15.  Two baseball tintypes from the 1870’s. The first shows four players with two bats on a 3 3/8” x 2” tintype. The second also shows four players with a bat on a 3 3/8 x 2 3/8” tintype with an oval matte. Both are framed, the first in an older frame and the latter in a more modern frame. Both are in excellent condition. Winning Bid $646.

Lot 16.  3 Rare Woodcuts from The Daily Graphic and Once A Week. First and foremost is an approximate 18” x 12” cover print from the July 5, 1873 Daily Graphic. A composite woodcut of the Athletics of Philadelphia show 9 players highlighted by Cap Anson, Dickie McBride and Ezra Sutton. Others are J Sensenderfer, J.E. Clapp, W. Fisher, M. McGeary and W.D. Fisler. Some roughness on the edges but excellent overall. The Once A Week print is from Nov. 5, 1889 and depicts the 1889 Championship between New York and Brooklyn. Highlighted are woodcuts Of Capt. Ewing and Brooklyn’s Capt. O’Brien, amidst other generic cuts. The other Once A Week is from May 6, 1890 and features “New York’s Brotherhood Park” and shows John Ward, Tim Keefe , 3 executives and 11 scenes from the park. Both Once A Weeks are excellent. Winning Bid $250.

Lot 17.  1887 Detroit Wolverines Tomlinson Cabinet from the James “Deacon” White Estate. The offered cabinet was sold a few years ago in a Hunt Auction as part of the “Deacon “White estate. The cabinet is a composite of 14 members of the 1887 Detroit Championship team, one of the best of the 19th century. The team had 3 Hall of Famers, Dan Brouthers, Sam Thompson and Ned Hanlon and many feel White should have been a fourth. Other notables from the club pictured are Charlie Bennett, Lady Baldwin, John Rowe, Harding Richardson, their best pitcher Charles Getzein (who won 29 games) and of course, Deacon White, whose estate the cabinet comes from. The White Estate provides a letter of Provenance. The Cabinet has some problems, mostly notable staining at the top, a broken lower right corner and some two-sided tape on the back that apparently held in an album. Still a very acceptable cabinet of a very important team. Winning Bid $1,331.

Lot 18.  1887 “Sketches of the NEW YORK BASE BALL CLUB”. Extremely rare 6 5/8” x 5” 52 page (plus covers) paperbound book featuring full page portraits and biographies of 20 Giant players, a fairly extensive 11 page history of baseball, schedules and ads. The cover features manager Jim Mutrie and his full page biography is followed by pages for the Giants six Hall of Famers – Roger Connor, James O’Rourke, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe and John Ward. In excellent condition, the volume is supported by a handmade leatherette holder, which the guide can be slipped into it. The spine of the holder has “1887 N.Y.B.B.C. YEARBOOK” inscribed in gold leaf. A similar book, in much lesser condition and without the slipcase realized $1,771 in our last auction. Winning Bid $1,100.

Lot 19.  4 N172 Old Judge cards. Ed Kappell, Columbus (very good, with pencil notation on rear), Harkins, Brooklyn with 2 specks of paper loss and reinforced lower right corner, Crowell, Cleveland , nice photo, light vertical crease, writing on rear and Kreig, St. Josephs (vg-ex, clean back). Winning Bid $605.

Lot 20.  N172 Old Judge Ed Silch SGC 50 VG/EX 4. Very nice 1889 card of Silch, while with Denver. Great photo quality and a clean back. Some wear at upper right kept grade down. Winning Bid $334.

Lot 21.  3 1887 numbered N172 Old Judge in near excellent condition. Group includes 0416 Deasley, N.Y. (Horizontal sliding position), light stain in upper right portion of card. The back has 2 minor abrasions where it was once in an album. Also 2 cards of Tom Burns, Chicago (0439 & 0454). One back is clean and one has a small tobacco spot. Winning Bid $733.

Lot 22.  6 N172 Old Judge cards including Tommy McCarthy in fair to very good condition. The tough Howes, Minneapolis is the only 1888 card (the rest are 1887). At least very good with a clean back. The HOF’er McCarthy is fair with some damage at the lower right corner and soiling on the back. The Farrar, Philadelphia is a very clear photo but has a spot of paper loss at the right side and has been rebacked. Doggie Miller of Pittsburgh is in good condition, Boyle, Indianapolis is good and Ferguson of Philadelphia has stains at the lower corners and is peeling. Winning Bid $711.

Lot 23.  N48 Allen & Ginter Virginia Bright and Sub Rosa Women baseball players group of 13. The group includes 9 Allen & Ginter under their Virginia Brights brand, two of which have the rare ad on the back. The group averages very good. Also 4 numbered Sub Rosa cards (3, 4. 5 and 7) in average very good condition. Winning Bid $2,796.

Lot 24.  3 Late 1880’s Studio Cabinets of Joe Visner (Gardner & Co Brooklyn), Fred Carroll (Dabbs Pittsburgh)  and Hick Carpenter (Levi & Gold Cinncinnati). Visner was an outfielder for Brooklyn only in 1889. Carpenter was a 3rd Baseman for Cincinnati in 1887-1889 and Carroll was a very good hitting catcher-outfielder for Pittsburgh through the 1880’s. Cards have good photo quality but have some staining along the sides and there are a couple of notched corners. Winning Bid $533.

Lot 25.  19th Century trade cards group of 17 in top condition. Includes 3 of the 4 H804-3 Buffords (vg-ex), 2 H804-6 Forbes (ex-mt), a H804-7A Merchants Gargling Oil set of 5, better color variety (ex-mt), 7 of the 9 H804-11 Cosack’s Circled Position Series, near mint appearance, however circular corner spots on rear where cards where fastened in album; Winning Bid $484.

Lot 26.  Extremely rare framed 1890 Players League Supplement. Probably one of a kind, this June 26, 1890 Supplement to Street & Smith’s “GOOD NEWS” featured a very elaborate 13” x 10” woodcut of 32 major league players from the Players League and National League. The scene shows a ballpark in the background with an advertisement for Good News weekly. The easily identified players are numbered to a key at the bottom and are arranged in 4 rows with 16 from each league and John Ward (P.L.) and Cap Anson (N.L.) easily identifiable in the center. Other prominent players are Mike Kelly, Clarkson, Ewing, Comiskey, Hanlon, Rusie, Brouthers, Connor and Connie Mack. Neatly matted and framed to 18 ” x 14 ” the supplement was originally offered in a 2005 Mastronet auction where it went for over $1,500. Winning Bid $1,331.
