Lot 327.  1897 J. Baines Company Golf Cards – 5 “Golf Ball Shape” and 1 Shield. Among the rarest, the most unusual and the earliest golf cards were issued by a company called J. Baines at the end of the 19th century. The circular cards, about 2 3/4” in diameter show the dimples of a golf ball, either “GOOD STROKE” or “GOOD SHOT” at the top and the name of a golf course at the bottom. There are apparently 25 cards in the set. A possible reason for the great rarity is the cards could be redeemed for prizes. The golf courses at the bottom are Sandwich, Cambridge, Herne Bay, Coombe and Dornoch. The Shield cards, which are very colorful are more generic. The offered card shows a golfer and a banner with “On The Green”. All cards are in excellent or better condition.
Winning Bid $733.

Lot 329.  Complete SGC Graded set of 12 W.F. Faulkner Golf Terms from 1901. Extremely rare, seldom offered set of 12 humour cards representing golf terms. Very difficult to find in nice condition, this set, completely graded by SGC is well above average. Produced by a London company for their Grenadier Cigarettes brand. Winning Bid $1,465.

Lot 330.  1902 Ogdens General Interest Series Tom Morris. The key card from this very popular set featured iconic golfer Tom Morris, erroneously labeled “J. Morris”. The card is in excellent condition with very minor wear, mostly at the upper right corner and a printing speck on the back.
Minimum Bid $300.

Lot 331.  1902 Ogdens set of 15 golfers from the General Interest Series with all cards SGC graded from 3 to 5. The set is highlighted by the Tom Morris card (designated as J. Morris) which is a 5. Grading summary includes 5 cards graded SGC 60 EX 5 including the Morris and one of the 4 Vardon cards, 6 cards graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4 including Harold Hilton and two of the Harry Vardon cards and there are 4 cards SGC 40 VG 3 including the last Vardon. Overall a remarkable set that because of the glossy surface and black borders do not allow it to grade well.
Winning Bid $1,000.

Lot 332.  1902 Ogdens Harry Vardon “C” Series SGC A. One of the rarest Ogdens, a stand alone card and the only one from the “C” series. The pose of Vardon is the same as the other Ogdens showing him posing in front of a building holding a club with “C229” printed in the lower left corner of the card. The card is unqique in that the “Cigarettes” is written in script unlike the other Ogdens cards from the “Tab” series. The grade of “A” is irresponsible . The card does have a light crease in the lower left corner, has a clean back, is a full 1/4” larger than the other Ogdens and shows no trace of being trimmed or any writing. The likelihood is SGC never graded another one.
Winning Bid $605.

Lot 333.  6 Ogden’s Guinea Gold golf cards all SCG graded. Highlighted by rare #476-Vardon card from the numbered series (SGC 60 EX 5). Also Robb (SGC 70 EX+ 5.5), Paxton (SGC 50 VG/EX 4), Low (SGC 50 VG/EX 4), Balfour (SGC 40 VG 3) and Vardon v. Braid (SGC 50 VG/EX 4).
Winning Bid $242.

Lot 334.  3 Complete Gallaher Ltd complete sets and one partial set, all with golf cards. The partial set, the 1912 Sports Series, featured ten cards with poses of James Braid and is the rarest of those offered here. There are five of the ten included here with an average condition of very good. Second is the Gallahers 1923 British Champions including 4 golfers. The final two Gallahers sets were 48 cards each and were issued in 1934 and 1935, the 1934 set featured 3 golfers and the 1935 featured 2. Almost all the complete sets were ex-mt and better.
Minimum Bid $400.

Lot 335.  6 1926 Spalding Sports Company of America golf cards including 2 SGC graded. Very difficult 200 card general sports set issued in 1926 with scrip to be used to buy Sporting Goods products. The two graded cards are Walter Hagan (SGC 40 VG 3) and Jesse Sweetser (SGC 60 EX 5). The remaining cards are all slightly trimmed and were cut from a sheet. They are Willie McFarlane, Francis Ouimet, Cyril Walker and George Von Elm, all U.S. Open winners except Von Elm and Sweetser.
Winning Bid $1,000.

Lot 336.  1926 Imperial Tobacco Company’s “How It Happened…...” partial set with duplicates. Issued as a 126 card set with 7 cards, each representing a different stroke outcome for 18 fictional holes for a total of 126 cards. The cards show comic renditions and have 2 different back designs for each of the 126 cards. Offered in this lot are 212 cards including duplicates. 86 of the 126 possible fronts are here, 2/3 of a set. There are also 126 duplicates, although many of these are undoubtedly back variations. The cards are in mixed condition, ranging from poor to excellent, averaging good to very good. It is also worth mentioning that there is a premium offer on the back for those sending 18 cards (one for each hole) and a score (from the number of strokes on the cards) totaling 72. The premium is a set of 6 Premium cards (9” x 11 3/4”) entitled “The Perils of Golf”. A warehouse find has made this premium set, once considered a rarity, common.
Minimum Bid $300.

Lot 337.  Three better SGC graded golf cards. A 1926 W512 Strip card of #39 Walter Hagan looking near mint but graded “A” for reasons only known by SGC. A 1930 J.A. Pattrreiouex of Bobby Jones graded 80 EX/NM 6 and a 1930 Millhoff James Braid also graded 80 EX/NM 6.
Winning Bid $334.

Lot 338.  Late 1920’s W590 rare Golf cards featuring Bobby Jones. The Jones card, which carries the sub-title National Amateur Golf Champion, a title he won in 1924, 1925, 1927-8 and 1930 is SGC graded 40 VG 3, a fairly high grade for this poorly cut series. Two other prominent golfers are included, Gene Sarazen and 1925 U.S. winner Willie McFarlane, but are very good and ungraded.
Winning Bid $550.

Lot 339.  1931 Churchman set of 50 Prominent Golfers. Famous tobacco set with caricatures of Famous Golfers. Highlights: 16-Hagan (ex+), 25-Jones (ex-mt), 31-Ouimet (ex), 35-Sarazen (vg-ex), 42-Vardon (nr mt). Balance: Almost all ex-mt or better.
Minimum Bid $750.

Lot 340.  1931 Churchman Set of 12 Prominent Golfers (Large) all SGC graded. Grades range 4 to 7 and include 2 cards graded SGC 84 NM 7 including Collette & Cotton, 2 cards graded SGC 80 EX/NM 6, 2 cards graded SGC 70 EX+ 5.5 including Vardon, 3 cards graded SGC 60 EX 5 including Bobby Jones and 3 cards graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4 including Hagan.
Winning Bid $600.

Lot 341.  1932 Abdullah Bobby Jones, graded SGC 40 VG 3, from the German issue of 200 sports stars. A genuinely rare set with two highly sought cards – of Babe Ruth and Bobby Jones. The Jones card offered here has been graded SGC 40 VG 3, though it gives the appearance of being near mint. Apparently downgraded for some toning on the rear of the card but a near perfect appearance.
Winning Bid $1,513.
