Lot 342.  R328 U.S. Caramel Golfers #3-Bobby Jones & #9-Gene Sarazen, both SGC graded. The two golfers in the U.S. Caramel set. The highly desired Jones card which was issued shortly after his “Grand Slam” win and his retirement. The card is one of the nicest you’ll ever see and is ex+-mt. The Sarazen is nearly as nice and is ex-mt. Clearly SGC didn’t agree. The Jones was graded SGC 50 VG 4 and the Sarazen SGC 40 VG 3. The only visible problem on both cards appears to be some paper aging. Both minimally look EX-MT. An SGC 50 VG-EX 4 poorly centered Jones was in our November 6, 2008 auction and went for $4,189.
Winning Bid $4,290.

Lot 343.  2 John Player sets of 25, Championship Golf Courses (1936) and GOLF (1939). The former set is in ex-mt condition and features diagrams of all the great courses in the United Kingdom including St. Andrews, Hoylake, Royal Lytham and St. Anne, St. Georges, Carnoustie, Portrush, etc. The “GOLF” set features instructional cards each featuring a color picture of a player and a drawing of a playing tip. All are ex-mt or better.
Winning Bid $350.

Lot 344.  2 Wills sets of 25 from 1924 (Golfing) and 1930 Famous Golfers. The latter set includes all the great British golfers of the era including Hagan, Braid, Cotton, Duncan, Herd, Mitchell, Ray, Taylor, Vardon. All the cards first appear near mint, however there is a minor semi circular impression in the upper left corner, probably from a photo mount, dropping the grade to excellent +. The “Golfing” set shows artists rendering of colorful scenes at courses in the United Kingdom including Braid Hills, Cruden Hills, Gleneagles, Hoylake, Royal Lytham, Muirfield, Portrush, Sandwich, Troon and St. Andrews.
Minimum Bid $600.

Lot 345.  Group of 1936-8 John Cotton “movie” cards from all 3 sets. In 1936-1938 a Scottish tobacconist, John Cotton Ltd., produced 3 card sets (one each year), in the form of flicker movies. Each set consisted of 50 cards and showed two movies, one on each side. The sides were numbered 1 –50 preceded by a letter. Each card had an indentation near the bottom of the cards, where it is assumed the cards could be rubber banded to view the movie. All the movies portray British Golfer Archie Compston. The 1936 set is difficult, the 1937 is very difficult and the 1938 set is genuinely scarce. Offered here are 49 cards, 36 from the 1936 set, 7 from the 1937 set and 6 from the 1938 set. All are in ex-mt condition or better.
Winning Bid $250.

Lot 346.  1951 Berk Ross Hit Parade of Champions Berk Ross Ben Hogan SGC 86 NM+ 7.5. High Grade example from the 72 card Berk Ross set issued in pairs.
Minimum Bid $250.

Lot 347.  1951 Wheaties Ben Hogan Premium Photo. From a very rare set issued by Wheaties (General Mills), possibly as a test set. Unusual in that there is no indication that it was produced by Wheaties. Consists of atheletes from various sports. Most of the premiums have the same photo used in the 1952 Wheaties set. The Hogan is one of those. The glossy photos measure 5” x 7”, are blank backed, and are best identified by an alphanumeric serial number at the lower right of the card. Ex-mt with light bend.
Winning Bid $433.
