Lot 13.  1875 St. Louis (Brown Stockings) Baseball Association Stock Certificate. Extremely rare numbered certificate for one share, measures 10 3/4" x 7 1/4"and is signed by President John Lucas and Secretary John A. O’Toole. Certificate shows an early baseball scene at the top. The Brown Stockings were a Professional team that joined the National Association in their final year before becoming a charter member of the new National League created in 1876. They stayed in existence for the first two years of the new NL. The St. Louis team finished with the 4th best record in the last year of the National Association at 39-29. Better players on the St. Louis club were Lipman Pike, Dickie Pearce, George Washington Bradley and a notable rookie and future HOF’er, in 1875, James "Pud" Galvin. The Brown Stockings name and colors would be resurrected in 1882 with the St. Louis Browns of the American Association who would then become the St. Louis Cardinals.

Lot 14.  Collection of 25 1879-80 N.Y. Clipper Woodcuts with 3 Hall of Famers. The 3 Hall of Famers are George Wright, Al Spaulding and James O’Rourke. Others are Allison, Baker, Barnes, Burdick, Corcoran, Dunlap, Farrrow, Hines, Leonard, Libby, Lynch, McCormick, Meyerle, O'Connor, Piercy, Poorman, Richmond, Snyder, White, Williamson and York The woodcuts are all neatly cut and include the extensive biography that was directly below the portraits in the newspaper. Two (Wright and Spalding) have been encapsulated by the Beckett Grading service as "Authentic". The others are in top loaders. The Woodcuts are from a series of 68 that appeared in the New York Clipper from April 1879 to November 20, 1880 and, in fact, a small pamphlet exists showing all the images. As a result they have become very collectible and are listed in the Standard Catalog.Scans of any of the other players are available on request.

Lot 15.  1885 Cincinnati Baseball Club of the American Association. Unusual size cabinet (8" x 5") portraying 14 members of the team from the Deacon White Estate. The cabinet highlights White's brother Will and "Bid" McPhee. Possibly the earliest known picture of McPhee. Will White won over 40 bgames three times. Others are Clarence Baldwin, Hick Carpenter, Jim Clinton, John Corkhill, Frank Fennelly, Charles Jones, Bill Mountjoy, Jim Peoples, Phil Powers, "Long John" Reilly, Gus Shallix and Charles Snyder (the manager and catcher in street clothes). The photographer was B. H. Herman and the card displays well with a clear picture and a slight crease in the upper left corner. The back is clean but shows some abrasion from being in an album at one time.

Lot 16.  1887 "Sketches of the NEW YORK BASE BALL CLUB". Extremely rare 6 5/8" x 5", 52 page (plus covers) paperbound book featuring full page portraits and biographies of 20 Giant players, a fairly extensive 11 page history of baseball, schedules and ads. Published by Richard Fox, publisher of the Police Gazette on Long Island, New York, The green tinted cover features manager Jim Mutrie and his full page biography is followed by pages for the Giants six Hall of Famers - Roger Connor, James O’Rourke, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe and John Ward. In excellent condition except for some separation at the spine which has been reinforced

Lot 17.  The 1888 Pictorial Baseball Album. A 5" x 6 5/8" soft cover book is the finest yearbook style publication of the 19th Century and among the rarest. The offered copy is one of three I know to exist. Published by Mussey & Harper in 1888, the 62 page book is filled with woodcuts of baseball notables and players. There are full page portraits, most with biographies, of Henry Chadwick, Albert Spalding, George Wright, Cap Anson, Harry Wright, Fred Pfeffer, John Ward, James O'Rourke, Roger O'Conner, Arthur Irwin, Fred Dunlap, Al Reach, Chris Von Der Ahe, Mike Kelly, John Clarkson, Charles Comiskey, Tip O'Neil, Bob Caruthers, Dan Brouthers, Deacon White and many other stars arranged four to a page. There are team woodcuts of the 1869 Reds and the 1887 Detroit Wolverines, There is a complete review of the 1887 World Series with box scores, schedules for 1888, a story of "Old Baseball" and much more. I have seen only two offered at auction in the last 15 years, one of which was sold in the Copeland Collection in 1990 for over $6,000. That same copy sold in our November 2005 auction for $6490. The cover shows some fading but otherwise the yearbook is in remarkable condition.

Lot 18.  4 N28 Allen & Ginter including 3 baseball HOF’ers and John L. Sullivan. The Baseball cards are Clarkson (vg), Ward (fair, with a crease on the front and back damage) and Comiskey (paper loss and paper remains on rear, front nice). The John L. Sullivan is vg-ex.

Lot 19.  2 N284 Buchner Gold Coins of tougher St. Louis players. "Tip" O’Neil (vg front, small ink spot on rear) and Dennis Sullivan (vg front with corner crease, and back with period purple rubber stamp).

Lot 20.  1888 Levi & Gold Studio Composite of the 1888 Cincinnati Reds. Standard size cabinet in near mint condition showing 16 portraits of the 1888 Cincinnati Reds by the prominent Cincinnati photographer Levi and Gold. The players portrayed include HOF’er Bid McPhee and the ambidextrous pitcher Tony Mullane. The players, starting at the top and from left to right are John Corkhill, James Keenan, Hugh Nicol, George Tebeau, Leon Viau, Clarence Baldwin, Tony Mullane, Elmer Smith, Hart, John Reilly, William Serad, Henry Kappel, John O’Connor, Hick Carpenter, Biddie McPhee and Frank Fennell. It appears as the bottom portion of the card has been trimmed away. However if that is the case it would be a 1/2 inch and it is unlikely there was any print.

Lot 21.  1888 Scholton Cabinet of Tony Mullane. A good case could be made for Mullane belonging in the baseball Hall of Fame. He had 284 lifetime wins, 276 in a span of 11 years, pitching mostly for the American Association Cincinnati team. A switch hitter, who could also pitch with either arm, and could play all positions. The cabinet was made for Goodwin to be used in their Old Judge series and was pose 331-3 in the World Tobacco Index. The cabinet is virtually near mint.

Lot 22.  N172 Old Judge Cap Anson, Chicago. 1889 famous Portrait of the Chicago captain and Hall of Famer. Card has a pink cast as is often the case and has a spot of paper loss towards the bottom. The back is clean.

Lot 23.  N172 Old Judge Tim Keefe, New York. 1887 first year Old Judge numbered card (#0315). Well centered and excellent photo quality. Light crease on the rear that barely shows through on the front. A very good card that appears better.

Lot 24.  N172 Old Judge John Clarkson, Chicago. 1887 first year Old Judge numbered card (#0444). Very nice photo quality with rounding of corners. The back has a thin streak of paper loss with some black album paper adhering.

Lot 25.  N172 Old Judge Ewing & Mascot. Very popular 1889 card of Ewing with the mascot, a youngster named Willie Breslin. The card has a pink cast, which from what I’ve seen, has no negative affect on grading. The card is nicely centered with sharp corners and the back is clean except for a couple of tiny tobacco spots. At least ex-mt.

Lot 26.  N172 Old Judge John Morrill, Boston Portrait. Rare 1887 pose. Excellent clarity. Back has slight discoloration from a stamp hinge. Tougher portrait. Very good.

Lot 27.  N172 Old Judge Louis Bierbauer and Robert Gamble, Athletics. Double player 1888 card in beautiful condition with regard to photo quality and centering. The name "BERNARD McATEE" has been rubber stamped in red on the otherwise blank back. Bierbauer is the player the Pittsburgh Pirates were named after.
