Lot 2.  Complete E271 Darby Chocolate Box of Mike Mowery and Bob Bescher. E271 Darby’s are one of the hobbies toughest type cards. Most of the population of E271’s. were a group of cards tacked to a wall in a garage that went through a fire. The remaining Darby’s except for two acceptably cut cards were six boxes found in upstate New York. The box of Mowery-Bescher is one of those boxes. The box is complete except for a piece of the upper flap which has been torn off. The Bescher panel has a very light barely noticeable crease. The Mowery panel is minimally excellent +. The back of the box, or more accurately the inside, is excellent except for some negligible marks probably made by the candy. We had a fire damaged card of Tommy Leach go for $1,705 in our November 6, 2002 auction and we had one of the two original non fire damaged cards of go for $4,594 in our April 2001 auction.
Minimum Bid $5,000.

Lot 3.  E145 Cracker Jack Series of 144 #88 Christy Mathewson The 1914 Cracker Jack of Mathewson has become one of the most sought after cards in cartophilia. Issued in the 1914 series of 144 Cracker Jacks, the illustration is a fairly bland pitching pose. When the 1914 series proved to be a success, Rueckheim, the makers of Cracker Jack, expanded the set in 1915 to 176 subjects and for some unknown reason changed the Mathewson to a much more attractive portrait pose. The 1914’s have always been far more difficult and the Mathewson is the most significant star to have any change in the two series. It’s become the most valuable Cracker Jack, surpassing Joe Jackson. The card has a small defect in the lower right corner. Otherwise some very light staining, a tiny crease (1/4”) at the top and is otherwise very good. A clearly inferior card was auctioned in April, earlier this year, was graded SGC 2 and went for $19,922. An enlarged photo of the offered card can be seen on our web page at www.oldjudge.com.
Minimum Bid $5,000.

Lot 4.  Very rare Exhibit Supply Co. of America 1928 Pacific Coast League Set of 32. Don’t recall this set being offered in many years. This was the only minor league issue of the Exhibit Supply Co featuring 32 cards representing the six teams in the Pacific Coast League. The cards are blue tinted and bear a striking resemblance to the major league set of blue exhibits issued in 1928. While several players played in the majors or were about to, most notable is the card of HOF’er to be Earl Averill (ex+-mt). Other familiar names are Walter “Dusty” Mails (the Mails card game set) (ex+-mt), Jimmy Reese (ex-mt), “Ping” Bodie (ex+-mt), Smead Jolley (ex+-mt), Lyn Lary (nr mt) and several others. The Frank Shellenback card is vg, the Gordon Slade card has a pinhole and the Johnny Kerr is very lightly autographed. The balance are all ex-mt or better. As nice a set as you could hope to see.
Minimum Bid $3,000.

Lot 5.  N43 Allen & Ginter near set of 5 baseball. Missing Jimmy Ryan. The key Buck Ewing card is very good-excellent with a 1” wrinkle at the bottom just outside the picture of Ewing. The George Miller card is ex+-mt possibly near mint. James Fogarty is excellent. The John Morrell card has a tiny 1/8” nick just below the “J” of John and is excellent. Finally, the Charles Getzein is excellent. Amazingly all cards have perfectly clean backs.
Minimum Bid $2,500.

Lot 7.  Incredible offering of 83 M127 Police Gazettes with Joe Jackson, Jim Thorpe, Honus Wagner, 2 different Christy Mathewsons and Ty Cobb. Issued over the years 1901 to 1917, the group is the largest we’ve ever seen offered at auction and comprise almost the entire known checklist as well as some not previously known. Police Gazette supplements usually features photos that have not been seen otherwise and there are many players who are not on other cards. Highlights: Joe Jackson (vg-ex), Jim Thorpe (vg-ex), Ty Cobb (ex), Walter Johnson (vg), Honus Wagner (ex), two Christy Mathewsons (ex, gd-vg), McGraw (trimmed sides, fair), McGinnity (slight trim, ex), Bresnahan (trimmed to picture, poor), Brown (vg-ex), Covaleskie (slight trim, vg), Baker (vg-ex), Wheat (vg, piece of tape), Marquard (ex), Chance (vg-ex), Wood (vg-ex), Maranville (trimmed to picture, poor), Collins (vg-ex) and Crawford (corner missing, o/w vg). The Balance are consistent with the above. Many were folded to be inserted in the Police Gazette magazine and have creases. Light creases for the most part were not considered in grading.
Minimum Bid $3,000.

Lot 8.  M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth Rookie card with Sporting News ad back. Since it is believed that the M101-4 set, issued one year after M101-5, does not have any cards known with the Sporting News ad on the back, having the Ruth card with the ad is the only way to be sure of having the “real” Ruth rookie card. Excellent condition front. Rear has two small pieces of clear tape.
Minimum Bid $2,500.

Lot 9.  One man’s All-Time All star team in a collection of 16 better baseball cards. Included are (C) - Berra (1949 Bowman #60 ex-mt), (1B) - Gehrig (1933 Goudey #160 PSA VG3), (2B) - Hornsby (1933 Goudey #119 ex-mt), (3B) - Schmidt (Topps #615 ex+-mt), (SS) - Wagner (E90-2 American Caramel PSA VG 3), (LF) - Ted Williams (39 Playball #92 vg), (CF) - T206 Cobb PSA EX 5), (RF) - Ruth (1933 Goudey #149 vg, (RHP) - Walter Johnson (1922 Eastern Exhibit nr mint), (LHP) - Grove (1934 Goudey #19 Excellent+), (Relief P) - Alexander (1940 Playball #132 ex-mt), (Mgr.) - Mack (1940 Playball #132 near mint), (Utility) - Rose (1963 Topps #537 near mint), (Sub1) - Morgan (1965 Toppds #16 near mint), (Sub 2) - Joe DiMaggio (1940 Playball #1 PSA VG-EX 4), (Sub3) - Mantle (1951 Bowman #253 fair-good).
Minimum Bid $2,000.

Lot 10.  A complete set of the M116 Sporting Life Envelopes. The M116 Sporting Life set was issued in 24 Series with 12 cards in each series and mailed in an envelope. The envelopes listed the players to be found inside with their teams. I don’t believe a set of 24 envelopes has ever been offered. Not often known is that in addition to the 24 series, Sporting Life made available additional packets of players by team. These were assigned numbers above 24. Included in this group are the envelopes for Series 50 (Phila. AL), 52 (Detroit), 54 (Boston AL), 70 (Pittsburgh), 72 (Chicago NL), 74 (Phila NL) and 76 (New York NL). These packets included rarer high series (19-24) cards and had the effect of diminishing the value of some high series cards. There are 31 envelopes in the lot. Condition ranges from poor to excellent, with most somewhere in between.
Minimum Bid $1,500.
