19th Century

  12 Lots

Lot 24.  Six 1879 Buffalo graphic cabinets. A never before offered set of 6 cabinets featuring drawing and commentary centered around the Buffalo Team of 1879. All cards show the symbolic Buffalo and make punful reference to game events naming Buffalo players and other players in the league. e.g. The Buffalos will be re-WARDed tomorrow”. Two cards show the Buffalo lineup which included star pitcher and HOF’er James “Pud” Galvin. Other prominent players, who are referred to are Davy Force and Manager Bill McGunnigle, Dave Eggler, etc. Five cards are near mint and one is excellent.
Minimum Bid $1,500.

Lot 25.  1886 New York Giant Cabinet. Beautiful cabinet of a great team. Roger Connor, John Ward, Tim Keefe, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch and James O’Rourke are among the 14 players. The photographer was J. Wood, a player with the National Association in 1871. An interesting note is that Wood died in 1886.The photo of Welch is the same one used in his Four base Hit. The photos can also be seen on other 19th Century cards including G & B’s and Yum-Yums. The only fault in the card’s condition is a scrape at the upper right of the picture of Gerhardt. This has been hand drawn in to try and give its original appearance. Otherwise a couple of 1/4” wrinkles. Still excellent.
Minimum Bid $750.

Lot 26.  Three pieces of 1880s Baseball Currency. A popular advertising vehicle in the late 1880’s was selling scrip in the form of currency to major league teams to advertisers who would display their business on the rear of the bill and sometimes on the front. The offered lot has the 1888 Detroit team (Thompson, Brouthers, Hanlon, etc) with Manager Watkins on the reverse (gd-vg), the 1887 Detroit team (same players, excellent) and the 1887 Chicago team (Anson, Clarkson, Sunday, Ryan) with manager Spalding on the reverse (ex-mt). The 1887 Detroit snuck through without an ad which is unusual. It is interesting to note the player on the list of the ad side is Cap Anson regardless of the team.
Minimum Bid $500.

Lot 27.  N29 Allen & Ginter Buck Ewing. Extremely nice copy. The width Measures 1/8” of an inch less than the listed size although the card is definitely not trimmed. The length is full size. Minor toning at the bottom and a clean back.
Minimum Bid $400.

Lot 28.  Three better 19th Century cards highlighted by an N284 Buchner Anson. Also a Buchner of Brown, Pittsburgh and an N162 Goodwin Carruthers. The Anson is the rare Type 3 in vg-ex. No creases, some minor soiling on the front with a Gold Coin ad back in blue. The N284 Brown is excellent with some very minor paper loss in an upper corner on the back. The Carruthers has an ex-mt front but has some minor paper loss on the back.
Minimum Bid $750.

Lot 29.  N526 Number 7 Cigars group of 4 cards from this 15 card set featuring the Boston NL team in 1889. Includes Madden (ex), Richardson (vg-ex), Quinn (ex) and Johnston (vg-ex).
Minimum Bid $750.

Lot 30.  N-unc Diamond S Cigar group of 5 cards from this offshoot of the N526 set. Includes Radbourn (vg), Brouthers (ex), Brown (vg), Manager Hart (vg) and Ganzel (gd-vg).
Minimum Bid $750.

Lot 31.  N526 Number 7 Cigars Mike Kelly. Beautiful ex+-mt card.
Minimum Bid $800.

Lot 32.  1888 Sporting Times Giants Cigar label. Beautiful 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 litho based on the Joseph Hall Cabinet of the 1888 Champion New York Giants. 18 Players and manager Mutrie are identified in the key at the bottom. One of the greatest teams ever included 6 HOF’ers. The label has some damage in the lower left corner and a stain which barely touches the picture label. The rear was used as an accounting ledger sheet and has some pencil writing.
Minimum Bid $300.

Lot 33.  Unusual 1895 New York Giant Cabinet. Most unusual cabinet portraying the 1895 N.Y. Giants in a composite of woodcuts. The bottom portion of the cabinet shows the Giants 1895 Home schedule. Players on the cabinet include Rusie, Van Haltren, Meekin, Knauss, etc. The woodcuts were based on photos taken in Spring Training. Ex-Copeland.
Minimum Bid $750.

Lot 34.  N352 Consolidated Cigarette Co. Rare Discovery of 4 19th Century Die Cut cards. Most collectors have seen the 19th century die cut set of ten which was issued in a sheet. To the best of my knowledge they have never been seen in any other form until now, though the 352 entry in the American Card Catalog makes reference to them. In this lot are two of the ten cards from the set (“Boston” and “Pittsburg”) and two similar cards, apparently from an English set. All four cards have been mounted on cards that were obviously especially made for these die cuts to be glued to. The backs of the card, which indicate Consolidated Cigarette Co, make clear reference to the baseball cards and others. Good to very good.
Minimum Bid $500.

Lot 35.  Ten volume Preston Orem series (1882-1891) — “Baseball From The Newspaper Accounts”. Most serious collectors of 19th Century are familiar with Preston Orem’s work “Baseball From the Newspaper Accounts 1845-1881”, a popular and fairly easy to find account of early baseball. Of significantly greater rarity is the eleven volumes Orem did subsequently consisting of spiral bound books. Interestingly the pages in the books are consecutively numbered and they total 628 pages. Offered here are the last nine volumes with a Xerox copy of the first volume (1882). We offered a complete set about ten years ago which went for $2,000+. We have only seen one set since. Excellent +.
Minimum Bid $500.
