Lot 231. Autographed U.S. Open Annuals 1958-2002 includes 2 Payne Stewarts, 4 Jack Nicklaus’ and Arnold Palmer among 40 autographed books. The Golf Journal started publication in or about 1950. They were published annually with detailed stories reviewing the U.S. Open and other USGA sponsored tournaments. The cover would show the winner of that year’s Open in action. The offered group includes every Journal from 1958 to 2002. Publication ceased shortly thereafter. The only unsigned books are the 2000 when the USGA issued a fold out cover featuring all past champions and the 2002 with Tiger Woods. Highlights include the two Payne Stewarts in 1991 and 1999, especially the latter because the magazine was released shortly before he died and there are probably few that were signed. The 1966 Open when Billy Caspar defeated Palmer in a playoff. The Journal shows a picture of both walking off and its signed by both. Of course the four Nicklaus, 3 Hale Irwins, 2 Ernie Els, Gary Player and on and on. Each cover was signed in person for our consignor, a midwest attorney. Accompanied by a Mike Gutierrez COA.
