Louis Van Oeyen Photos. Group of 48 sepia photos by the highly coveted Cleveland photographer, Louis Van Oeyen, who first received wide recognition when his photos began appearing in the Reach Guide in 1910. From 1909 to 1922, the vast majority are 1909-1913. All are major league players except one Boston Red Sox batboy. Most have player's name hand printed on piece of paper pasted on front.



Lot 58.  Beautiful Ty Cobb Portrait. 4 1/2 x 7 1/2, obviously cropped from larger photo with portion of Van Oeyen oval stamp visible on reverse. Slight clip at bottom corners but could easily be matted out. ca 1911. Near excellent.

Lot 61.  Joe Jackson, Ray Chapman, John "Buddy" Ryan, Paddy Livingston of Cleveland. 5 x 7 Van Oeyen photo of the 4 fielding near the outfield fence of League Park in Cleveland. Jackson has his arms raised. Border chips, lower right and left corners missing, small hole away from image. Fair. Very light Van Oeyen oval stamp on rear. ca1911.

Lot 62.  5" x 7" Van Oeyen photo shows Giants Leon "Red" Ames and Christy Mathewson to his right. Fans sitting atop houses behind right field fence identify this as a game at Shibe Park in Philadelphia during 1911 World Series. The Giants and Athletics also played in the 1913 WS, but Ames had been traded to Cincinnati on May 22. In addition, the Giants are wearing all black uniforms used exclusively in the 1911 World Series. Mathewson started Games 1, 3 and 4, winning the first, and Ames was the starting and losing pitcher in the sixth and final game of the series after pitching 4 shutout innings in relief in Game 5. Oval Van Oeyen stamp on rear. Excellent.

Lot 63.  Arnold "Chick" Gandil, when with Washington. Standing with ball in this 8 x 10 with chipping well above image. Fair, but damage could be easily removed without hurting image by cropping to 7 x 9, as John Spalding did when he used this photo in his book, "PCL Stars, Vol. 2" A 1913 photo, predating Gandil's "Black Sox" days.

Lot 64.  Wilbert "Uncle Robbie" Robinson, as coach for the Giants in this 5 x 7 Van Oeyen photo. Robinson was a Giant coach from 1911 to 1913 and then became the Brooklyn Manager. Excellent with a light oval Van Oeyen stamp on the rear. ca1911.

Lot 66.  5" x 7" Van Oeyen photo shows Giant Josh Devore rounding third base to score in 4th game of the 1911 World Series. The third base coach appears to be John McGraw. Same photo appears on Page 188 of the 1912 Reach Baseball Guide. Oval Van Oeyen stamp on rear. Excellent.

Lot 69.  Fabulous George Burke Photo Collection of 456 B&W and sepia photos. Chicago photographer George Burke began photographing baseball players in 1929, when he succeeded famous Chicago Examiner cameraman Francis P. Burke as the Cub's official photographer. His location in Chicago gave him access to players on all teams in the American and National Leagues. Burke suffered a heart attack in 1948 and died in 1951. Collection includes 396 different photos & 3 duplicates (4x6), plus 35 different. proofs (5x7), plus 22 different reproductions (4x6) which were produced by Burke from negatives that he obtained from other early photographers. At least 95 percent are excellent to ex-mint, none worse than Vg. The collection, which comes in three binders in high quality photo mounting sheets, includes 83 HOFer photos -- Alexander, Bancroft, Barrow, Bender, Bottomley, Bresnahan, Brouthers, Cobb, Cochrane (2), E.
