Lot 92.  R310 Butterfinger cardboard variety set of 11 including very rare Lou Gehrig. The thin paper R310 Butterfingers are comparatively common but the cardboard versions only exist for 11 subjects in the set. The difference, aside from the thickness, is the red overprint advertising "FREE BASEBALL PICTURE with Butterfinger" in the form of a drawing of the candy bar". The cards are actually storekeeper inserts which were intended to be placed upright in candy boxes to sell the product in a similar manner to Boston Garters were years earlier. Until a few years ago there were only ten known subjects until remarkably a Lou Gehrig was made several years ago. I believe there are only two Gehrigs known. The set consists of Richard Bartell, Walter Berger, Ralph Boyle, James Collins, Paul Derringer, Benny Frey, Johnny Moore, Bob O'Farrrell, Mel Ott, Steve Sewtonic and of course Gehrig. The Gehrig has some minor staining along the borders, Ott has a very light corner crease, the balance have minimal; defects and would grade an average of excellent. May be one of a kind.
Winning Bid $3,894.
