Lot 11.  Golden Ball Tobacco Label with Philadelphia A's players Dickie McBride and Joe Battin. Breathtaking circa 1874 9 1/2 x 6" full sized tobacco label considered to be the finest of all known tobacco labels. The "Golden Ball" was a prize, created in 1868, to be given to the National Baseball Champions. The Philadelphia Athletics were favored to win the first "Golden Ball" and remained an important team through the National Association (1871-5). The players depicted are their best pitcher, Dickie McBride (on the left), and 2nd baseman, Joe Battin, on the right. Ex-mt.
Winning Bid $1,331.

Lot 12.  1865-6 Frank Leslies Woodcuts in full issues plus one better Harpers. Two of the most prestigious woodcuts known. The November 4, 1865 Leslies featured a centerfold spread showing the game and players from the Eckford-Atlantic match at the Union grounds in Brooklyn. 20 players, from the area teams are illustrated and in many cases the only pictures known for them. Included are Jim Creighton (baseball's first superstar), Mort Rogers, Jos. Leggett, etc. Also the cover of the July 21, 1966 issue featured the Officers of the National Association of Baseball players including Mort Rogers. Both are excellent. The Harpers from 1885 features a group of baseball's great players (Kelly, Ewing, Ward, O'Rourke, Radbourn, etc) in a full page composite. Also excellent.
Winning Bid $363.

The woodcuts include a very desirable Leslies from 1886 showing a full page composite of the New York Giants, a full page 1885 Harpers showing a composite of National League All-Stars and a half page Harpers of Buck Ewing and Tim Keefe.
Winning Bid $484.

Lot 16.  N172 Old Judge Harry Stovey. 1889 card with incredible photo quality of the player many thought was an early version of Mickey Mantle, with power and speed. Solid corners and a clean back but with a rubber stamped name "Frank H. Sawyer" of a previous owner.
Winning Bid $711.

Lot 17.  National League Fine Cut Trade card with American Eagle Tobacco Co advertising on the back. Perhaps the most valuable and prestigious of the baseball trade cards. Corner crease in the upper right and a 1/2" tear 2/3 down the right side, but the card presents beautifully.

The Upper right corner of the April 13, 1890 issue shows an ad in the upper right corner noting "WITH PORTRAIT SUPPLEMENT ". On the rare occasion that I've seen a supplement, its always been trimmed. The offered Allen is complete and aside from a couple of minor flaws is in excellent condition. Bob Allen's first year was 1890 and played with Philadelphia for several years.
Winning Bid $2,148.

Lot 20.  1891 Boston Photograph with Old timers scorecard. At first appearance a cabinet, measuring 4 1/4" x 6 5/8", the card has a high quality real photograph on thinner stock than a cabinet and carries what appears to be half a scorecard (there was no other half) with a pre-printed list of Boston old timers. (Kelly, Clarkson, Leonard, Sutton, ,etc). The photograph, by famed Boston photographer G. Waldon Smith, shows a composite of the 1891 Boston team including Kelly, Clarkson, Nichols, Stovey, Lowe, Bennett, Manager Selee and 7 other well known players. Winning Bid $750.
