Lot 11. Golden Ball Tobacco Label with Philadelphia A's players Dickie McBride and Joe Battin. Breathtaking circa 1874 9 1/2 x 6" full sized tobacco label considered to be the finest of all known tobacco labels. The "Golden Ball" was a prize, created in 1868, to be given to the National Baseball Champions. The Philadelphia Athletics were favored to win the first "Golden Ball" and remained an important team through the National Association (1871-5). The players depicted are their best pitcher, Dickie McBride (on the left), and 2nd baseman, Joe Battin, on the right. Ex-mt.
