Lot 139.  Spectacular "Photo" Collection of approximately 14,500 major league players thru the 1999 or 2000 season. It was the goal of Don McPherson to have a picture of everyone who ever played Major League Baseball. While he didn't achieve the impossible goal, he came as close as imaginable and in the process put together a collection that baseball research organizations only dream about. Don would Xerox the best card of the players he had and made a post card sized Xerox copy. He added some biographical information and made, in effect his own card. On players that cards didn't exist for, he would try and obtain his likeness through whatever means he could, a photo, a team postcard, a newspaper, etc. The collections consists of 14 loose leaf books, each approximately 3" thick. Each book contains approximately 130 4 pocket plastic sheets in which "photo cards" have been placed back-to-back. i.e. each books contains about 1,040 players (pictures). The total collection would have over 14,000 photos. The entire collection is arranged alphabetically. Spaces have been left for the few hundred missing players. The quality of the "photos" vary greatly. Some are laser quality and others are poor, the result of a small head on a post card being magnified 100 times. Serious bidders should take into account that the collection would be welcome by several accredited charitable institutions, e.g. the Hall of Fame and SABR, the latter which had already expressed interest when this collection was originally auctioned, and could make a sizable tax deduction if donated. The collection is in 5 office boxes and postage will be added at cost. This lot is offered exactly as it was in our November 6-7, 2002 auction, when it sold for $4,176. The winner of the lot at that time is the consignor now.
Winning Bid $4,608.
