New York Clippers

  4 Lots

This weekly publication began in 1853, and it ran until 1924, catering to the theatrical, amusement, sporting, outdoor entertainment and circus trade. The "Clipper" as it was generally referred to, was important in the popularizing of baseball. In 1924 the publication became "Variety". The Following are individual volumes of the New York Clipper, which were de-accessed from the Mears Collection at the Cleveland Public Library. The pages are all present and in good condition but have been separated for micro-filming. Additional volumes will be in our next auction.

Hundreds of box scores not only of the N.L. but baseball all around. The March 23rd issue gives a team by team rundown of the coming season with a team by team review. Boston featured pitcher Tommy Bond, who won 40 of Boston's 41 victories. Other prominent Red Stockings were George Wright, Ezra Sutton, James O'Rourke and Mgr. Harry Wright. The Providence Club had John Ward, Lipman Pike and Paul Hines. Chicago was in the league with Cap Anson and Joe Start. Al Spalding played one game in 1878, his last in baseball and went 2-4. We didn't check for the box score , but it should be there. The covers and pages are loose but in good condition.
