Lot 300.  1866 Book of American Pastimes by Charles Peverelly. First edition. Considered the first official baseball history and arguably the most significant baseball book ever written. Of the 566 pages, 187 are devoted to baseball and include a diagram of the field at the time and a beautiful full page woodcut at the beginning of the chapter, which is divided into team histories. These include a rather lengthy section on the Knickerbockers. The information found here, including rosters, scores and game dates dating back to the 1850's cannot be found easily elsewhere. The book is in excellent condition although the spine is a little weak at a couple of spots.

Lot 301.  1887 Spalding's Library of Athletic Sports "The Art of Pitching and Fielding", a rare and significant very early book, and a collection of 13 different "How to Books.." early instructional titles from 1909 to 1917 from Spalding's Athletic Library Baseball. The 1887 book, Number 3 from A. G. Spalding's first sports publishing venture, the Library of Athletic Sports, which became Spalding's Athletic Library in 1892. Hard cover added later is Ex+. Original 1887 soft cover book has two small pieces of tape on covers and a front cover nick, but otherwise is Vg-Ex. The balance is an exceptional group of a baker's dozen of hard to find Spalding baseball instructional books from 1909 to 1917, many with photos of Hall of Famers (Bender, Bresnahan, Brown Chance, Cobb, Coveleskie, Crawford, Evers, Joss, Keeler, Lajoie, Mathewson, Sisler, Wagner, Walsh) and other top major league stars of the pre-World War I era. Loaded with ads for Spalding sporting goods. Included are editions of How to Bat, Catch, Coach/Manage, Pitch, Play First Base (2 different), Second Base (2 different), Shortstop, Third Base, the Outfield and Run Bases. All are Ex or better except How to Bat, which has small bit of spine damage, How to Play Baseball, which has spine tape on Vg covers, Coach/Manage and How to Play Outfield, which are Vg. Lot 302.  1889 Athletic Sports in America. Hubbard Brothers, Publishers, Philadelphia, 1889. original red cloth, 711 pps. The volume includes four chromolithographic plates, with tissue-guards; 36 black-&-white plates and many text illustrations. Covers rubbed, with some tarnishing of gilt; the interior, save for a couple of stains, is excellent. Two thirds of the contents being devoted to baseball and almost half of those pages recounting the extraordinary global barnstorming tour of members of the Chicago Baseball Club and the All-American team, made up of members of other clubs, in 1888-1890.

Lot 303.  Spalding's Athletic Library Baseball Books - group of 23 mainly "How to" instructionals from 1911 to 1940. Top quality collection of 23 baseball books includes 1911 Indoor Baseball, 1915 How to Score, 1920 Baseball for Beginners, 1930 College Guide, 1933 Baseball for Women and "How To" instructionals on batting, catching, playing the outfield, running bases, umpiring etc. published from 1917 to 1940. All are soft cover except a hardback combining 1917 editions of How to Pitch and How to Run Bases (books are Ex while hardback cover has a stain). A 1928 How to Catch & Run Bases has no back cover but the rest are complete and the vast majority are Ex or better.

Lot 304.  Sporting Life scorecard and Trade Card. Fold over generic Scorecard from Sporting Life with baseball player on cover in the likeness of Cap Anson. Unscored and in excellent condition. Also a Sporting Life Trade card in the same size (7" x 4 1/4") with various sports including baseball on the front and Sporting Life advertising on the rear. Excellent with a light crease.

Lot 305.  A History of the Boston Base Ball Club 1871-1897 by George V. Touhey. One of the rarest and most important baseball books of the 19th Century. Written in 1897, it covers the history of the Boston Club since the inception of the National Association in 1871 (through 1875) and the beginning of the National League in 1876.The book is 242 pages. The first half of the book covers the history of the team while the balance has over 50 articles on individual players. Filled with photos of all of Boston's great players and teams. In excellent condition.

Lot 306.  Complete collection of 16 (plus 2 extra Sporting Life Schedule Guides from 1904-14 and five rarely seen associative pieces). The guides come in two forms, either individual leagues or a combined guide which shows the AL on one side and the NL (inverted) on the other side. The 1904-1907 Guides measure about 4" x 5" and the later guides measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2". The Guides are illustrated by miniature W601 Composites, The lot contents are 1904 (AL, NL), 1905 (Comb), 1906 (Comb), 1907 (AL, NL), 1908 (AL, Comb), 1909 (AL, NL), 1910 (AL, NL), 1911 (Comb), 1912 (Comb) and 1913 (Comb). Also included is a 1914 Sporting Life Schedule Booklet which marks the conclusion of the series. It's is a modified book with no pictures, just schedules and is in ex-mt condition and very rare. In addition there is a 1907 Lajoie Guide and a 1910 Sporting Life Eastern League Guide. Condition of the guides are 10 ex-mt, 6 excellent, 2 very good. The 5 associative pieces are as follows: 1) The envelope a schedule book was mailed in, addressed and excellent. 2) A mint Sporting Life marketing letter enclosed with the schedule book trying to obtain a subscription and offering you 12 Cabinets (W600's). The letter has the image of Ty Cobb in the logo at the upper left. 3) A list of the available Cabinets with a familiar photo of a hand holding some W600's. 4) A return letter in mint condition for the customer to subscribe and enumerate the 12 W600's he would like and finally 5) a return envelope to the Sporting Life in mint condition.

Lot 307.  A Complete run of the 7 Sporting Life Publication booklets from 1906 to 1911. Includes "How the White Sox won the World's Championship for 1907", "How the Cubs won the World's Championship for 1908", "How the Cubs won the World's Championship for 1909", "How the Pirates won the World's Championship for 1910", "How the Athletics won the World's Championship for 1911", "How the Athletics won the World's Championship for 1912" and "A Brief History of Baseball". All are in excellent condition and the Pirate book and two Athletic books are very difficult.

Lot 308.  1906 Old Boston Boys and the Games they Played by James D'Wolff Lovett. Published in 1906 the book recounting sports in Boston in the 19th Century, especially Boston. This is a numbered copy (#96) from a limited edition of 250. Over 25 one sided b&w plates including better baseball of Mort Rogers, George Wright , the Lowell and Harvard baseball nines.

Lot 309.  Extraordinarily rare 1907 Chicago White Sox yearbook style book "Who's Who in The Chicago Americans. A possibly one of a kind, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4" book, consisting of 32 pages (plus covers). The first 16 pages feature a portrait of a White Sox player on the top half of the page and biographical data at the bottom. The players consist of Ed Walsh, George Davis, Fielder Jones, Billu Sullivan, Frank Isbell, Jiggs Donohue, Lee Tannehill, Ed Hahn, Patsy Dougherty, Doc White, Frank Owen, Nick Altrock, Roy Patterson, Frank Smith, Ed McFarland and George Rohe. The second half of the book has stats, schedules, history rules and interesting "Facts for the Fans". The next to last page carries an interesting ad that indicates a similar yearbook would be produced for all 16 major league teams. I've never seen any other book. The back page has a pencil notation indicating a previous owner paid $100 in 1982. The book is in excellent condition and the centerfold is loose.

Condition breakdown: 1902 hardback, no covers, Ex; 1903 & 1904, spine tape, Ex; 1905, No FC, Vg-Ex; 1906 hardback, one page taped to another, contents Vg-Ex; 1907, spine tape, covers Good, contents Ex; 1908, hardback (no original covers, homemade covers taped on), Ex; 1909 corner chip FC, BC, contents Ex; 1910 through 1939, all Ex (heavy, clear spine tape 1914, 1926-29, 1933, 1939); 1918-1925 are hardback presentation copies given to Francis C. Richter, publisher of Sporting Life and editor of the Reach Guide, whose name is stamped on front covers in gold. A detailed list of condition of all 38 books is available on request.

Lot 311.  Spalding Baseball Record Books - complete run of 17 (1908-1924) including a group of 6 from the collection of Francis Richter. Terrific complete run of 17 Ex or better condition books from 1908 through 1924. The 1915 & 1918 are bound with leatherette covers, but no original covers. 1919-1924 are hardback presentation copies given to Francis C. Richter, publisher of Sporting Life and editor of the Reach Baseball Guide. A detailed list of condition of all 17 books is available on request.

Lot 312.  1912 Who's Who in Baseball. The very rare first Guide from Baseball Magazine's well known annual which is nearing its 100th anniversary. After the first issue, wikch is very rare, the guide wasn't produced in 1913-5, came back in 1916 and thereafter. Minor wear at the spine, otherwise excellent+.

Lot 313.  1933 Who's Who in Baseball with rare paperback version. The 1933 Who's Who Classic baseball book contains 542 pages. The binding is loose at the spine (reparable) and the last page is missing. The much rarer, condensed paper version is complete at 64 pages with its attractive color paper cover. There is tape on the spine. It is interesting to note on the hardback book, the name and address D.E. Dugdale, 4219 Beach Drive, Seattle Wash" with a date of 10/4/33 in written on the inside cover. The same address is rubber stamped on the inside back cover. I believe this would be Dan Dugdale, who played major league ball in the 1880's and appeared in the N172 Old Judge series. Dugdale died in 1934 in Seattle.

Lot 314.  Complete run of the American Card Catalog starting with the nearly impossible to find 1939 first edition. We doubt such a run has been ever offered. Included are 7 books, the extremely rare and virtually never offered first 1939 Edition, the nearly as rare 1946 edition with its original mailing envelope, the 1953 edition with its original mailing envelope, 2 1960 Hardcovers, one in near mint condition with dustjacket and another well used with letters and notes on enclosed papers kept by Buck Barker including a post card to Buck from Lionel Carter. Finally an original 1968 paper edition in near mint condition. Also included is a supplement, showing ten years of additions (1960-70) to the American Card Catalog, edited by Ed Broder. The 1939, 1946, 1953 and 1960 came from the collection of Watervliet, N.Y. collector Bill Knapp, the other 1960, the Supplement and 1968 came from the collection of Buck Barker.
