Extremely rare “Souvenir of The Baseball Season of 1889”, published by The Mercury of Philadelphia.

Lot 22. Extremely rare “Souvenir of The Baseball Season of 1889”, published by The Mercury of Philadelphia. A 16 page, 17 ¼” x 12” Supplement with each page allocated to one of the 16 major leagues in the National League and American Association. The “front page” features the National League Champion New York Giants, reproducing a composite cabinet with photos of the Giants used in S.F. cards and elsewhere. The page also carries a lengthy article on the Giants. The backside of the Cover shows the American Association Champion Brooklyn team. Credit for that photo is the LEVYTYPE Co. of Philadelphia and is one of the Photo plates that were used in the notable volume, Athletic Sports in America. The fact is, all the team photo plates used in Athletic Sports are reproduced here, but with the identification of all the players, which are missing in the book All the pages take the same format and are unnumbered. Technically, any page could be the cover. Condition is decent, there is some tape on the spine and other spots along the edges, but overall in good condition. Have never seen this offered before and I only know of one other copy.
