Lot 257. California, Stanford & Kezar Football Stadium Postcards and Photos Collection of 110. Outstanding historical collection of 110 different cards & photos showing interior or exterior views of football and other sports facilities and the campuses of two great San Francisco Bay Area rival universities, plus Kezar, San Jose State and Santa Clara stadiums. The University of California at Berkeley collection numbers 81 cards. 20 rarely seen cards show old California Field, opened in 1904, while 51 show Memorial Stadium built in 1923. Others depict Harmon Gym, Edwards track stadium, Edwards Field baseball stadium, the famous Cal football statue and several cartoon cards. The earliest football card, postmarked 1905, features photos of each 1905 Big Game captain in action. Thirty-two of the Cal cards are early B&W or sepia. Most of the color Memorial Stadium cards are pre-linen or linen. There are 20 Stanford University postcards. Twelve tough cards depict old Stanford Field, opened in 1905, and eight show Stanford Stadium built in 1920. Thirteen B&W and seven of Stanford Stadium are color, including 3 pre-linen and 3 linen. Two 5 x 7 B&W photos are of Stanford Field, one showing Big Game action in 1911 and the other the Stanford rooting section. In addition are a trio of 3x5 sepia photos, 2 at the 1919 Big Game at Stanford Field and one showing the 1928 Stanford Stadium ceremony in which Herbert Hoover accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for President. There are two San Francisco Kezar Stadium postcards, one an Ex-Mt linen of the original stadium and the second a slightly oversized mint view of the modern stadium that replaced the original in the 1980s. There are additional color postcards showing San Jose State’s Spartan Stadium and a deckle edged view of the University of Santa Clara’s Buck Shaw Stadium. Also included is a 5-page article describing the history of the Cal, Stanford and Kezar stadiums and their predecessors. Overall condition is Ex to Ex-Mint.
