Amos Alonzo Stagg’s Spalding Football Guide Collection

Lot 258. Amos Alonzo Stagg’s Spalding Football Guide Collection 71 (with 18 Stagg signatures) books including near complete run 1890 to 1940 (missing only 1892 & 1893), including all 38 Eastern & Western regional editions (1906-25) plus 1876 Yale-Harvard rugby rules (reprint) and 1889 & 1890 Wright & Ditson Football Rules. This may be the most comprehensive and top quality Spalding Football Guide collection (1890-1940) ever assembled because of the inclusion of both annual Eastern and Western regional guides for the years 1906-1925. Each regional guide has photos and articles that differ from the other volume issued in the same year. Even the spectacular University of Notre Dame Hesburg Library collection is missing some of these East-West regional guides. Most collectors and dealers were unaware of the existence of the regional guides when the consigner assembled this run in 1999 and 2000. Detailed list of book conditions and a list of differences between the East & West editions are available upon request. A total of 68 Spalding guides plus the hardback 1876 rugby rules reprint (Ex), hardback 1889 (Vg) and 1890 (Vg-Ex) Wright & Ditson Football Rules. These three and 50 of the Spalding books are from the collection of Football Hall of Famer Amos Alonzo Stagg. Forty-three are hardback guides (1890, 1894-1904, 1906-08, 1911-12, 1914-16, 1918-40) and those starting in 1921 are presentation copies, with “A. A. Stagg” stamped in gold on the front cover. All hardbacks except 1914, 20 & 21 also are bound with original covers. The condition is outstanding because Stagg owned a complete second run of guides that he used for frequent reference. Thirteen books are signed by Stagg (total 18 signatures). Stagg was on the first All-America team in 1889 (Yale, end), had a 57-season career coaching record of 314-199-35 and was a member of the College FB Rules Committee for more than 50 years. A few of the early books in this significant collection have minor writing inside and are vg, but the rest are at least Excellent and many of the books from 1918 to the end of the run are at least Ex-Mt. Complete list of conditions available on request.
