Lot 11. Bound 1857 Volume of The New York Clipper in slipcase with incredible baseball woodcut. The September 12th, 1857 issue of the Spirit of The Times is long considered to have the first baseball illustration in a periodical. The woodcut shows the match between the Gotham and Eagle teams at the Elysian Fields. Not well known is that the September 19th issue of the New York Clipper had a different illustration of that same match on page 58 with an account of the game below. A box score of that match as well as others accompany the issue. The 1857 volume represents the fifth year of the Clipper and starts with issue 1 on April 25th and the pages are numbered consecutively to page 416 of the April 17th 1858 issue. Page 416 was a full page Index to Volume 5. Coverage of all the early teams including the Knickerbockers, Excelsiors, etc are all there. The volume is in excellent readable condition although many pages or groups of pages are loose.
