Uncataloged and unknown exhibit card of Elmer Smith.

Lot 35. Uncataloged and unknown exhibit card of Elmer Smith. Elmer Smith’s major league career spanned the years 1914 when he came to Cleveland through 1925, his last year with Cincinnati. He played mostly with Cleveland through 1921, the first year of baseball exhibit cards. The card shows a picture of Smith batting with “Elmer Smith” in script and the most unusual wording “CLEVELAND B.B. PLAYER” below his name. Smith was only portrayed in one exhibit set, the 1922, which shows his team as Boston. Obviously the offered card is not from either the 1921 or 1922 exhibit sets. The script style shown on the card does not match any of the 1920 baseball exhibit sets. It is a complete mystery and the use of the wording “B.B. Players” creates the possibility it was part of a non-sports set. Over many years I’ve consulted with several serious exhibit collectors about the card and none have ever seen it. It may very well be one of a kind. The condition is poor to fair with multiple creases.
