Following is the most complete and finest baseball Strip card collection ever offered. The passion of a long time Eastern collector, the collection was competed (and upgraded over a period of thirty years.



Lot 76.  W512-3 complete set of 100 in 3 sheets of 25 and 25 singles. The sheets are in plastic sheets with red-pink pages as a backdrop. The 25 singles have been mounted with transparent corners on the same red-pink page. The set contains 36 baseball players, 24 boxers. The balance are actors, actresses and other sports. Sheet 1 (Upper left), has a nick on the left side and a nick in the lower left and is otherwise excellent +. Sheet 2 (Upper right) has the corner off the upper right, otherwise the sheet is ex-mt. What would be Sheet #3 are the singles and almost all cards are excellent or better. The final Sheet #4 (Lower right) has rounded corners and is otherwise ex+-mt. Obviously, there are many near mint cards if the sheets were to be cut including the baseball players.
Minimum Bid $2,500.


Lot 77.  1919-21 W514 complete set of 120. The high value cards in this set are not the Hall of Famers but the Black Sox players, of which there are 7 of the 8 missing only McMullen. The cards are displayed, back to back, in four 15 pocket sheets, and the appearance is striking with almost all cards showing ample margins all around with minimal creasing. Highlights: 2-Ruth (ex), 3-Flesch (ex), 15-Jackson (gd-vg, light corner crease in lower left), 31-Gandil (ex), 35-Williams (good, light crease along right side, appears excellent), 43-Cobb (vg), 72-Mathewson (vg-ex), 82-Cicotte (vg appearance, looks small), 91-Weaver (ex), 94-Johnson (ex-mt), 105-Risberg (vg-ex). Balance: 27 cards excellent, 29 cards very good-excellent, 38 cards very good, 7 cards good-very good, 8 cards good.

Lot 78.  W515-1 complete set of 60. Beautiful set with nearly 75% excellent or better. Highlights: 3-Ruth (ex-mt), 10-Cobb (vg), 28-Speaker (ex-mt), 38-Johnson (vg-ex), 47-Ruth (ex-mt), 49-Alexander (ex-mt), 55-Hornsby (ex). Balance: 39 cards excellent and better, 8 cards very good, 6 cards good.

Lot 79.  W516-1 complete set of 30. Highlights: 1-Babe Ruth (ex), 5-Speaker (ex, cut thin), 6-Cobb (good, cut short), 7- Hornsby (ex), 8-Johnson (vg, cut thin), 9-Alexander (ex), 24-Mathewson (vg). Balance: 13 cards excellent or better, 8 cards very good, 2 cards good.

Lot 80.  W516-2-2 complete set of 30. Spectacular high grade set. Highlights: 2-Alexander (ex+-mt), 3-Johnson (nr mt), 5-Ty Cobb (ex+-mt), 10-Babe Ruth (nr mt), 27-Mathewson (nr mt). Balance: All are high grade ex+-mt to near mint.

Lot 81.  1931 W517 complete set of 58 including all 4 variations. Highlights: 4-Ruth (vg), 15-Alexander (vg-ex), 20-Ruth (vg), 21-Foxx (good), 30-Ott (vg), 35-Gehrig (vg-ex), 38-Hornsby (ex+-mt), 39-Grove (gd-vg); Balance Hall of Famers: 5 cards excellent-mint, 8 cards excellent, 13 cards very good, 2 cards good; Balance: 4 cards excellent-mint, 1 card excellent, 9 cards very good, 8 cards good.

Lot 82.  W519 numbered complete set of 20. Average condition set but a very difficult one. The Baker card is especially interesting as it has a complete ghost image on the rear of the card (see scan). Highlights: 2-Marquard (vg), 5-Ruth (vg), 6-Sisler (gd, o/c), 9-Robinson (gd), 11-Baker (vg-ex), 15-Schalk (ex), 18-Frisch (fair), 19-Collins (gd). Balance: 5 cards excellent-mint, 5 cards very good, 1 card poor.

Lot 83.  W519 unnumbered blue background complete set of 10. Extremely difficult set. All the designs except Cicotte are in the above W519 numbered set. Highlights: 1-Cicotte (ex-mt), 2-Collins (ex), 4-Frisch (vg, corner crease), 7-Marquard (good, light hor. cr.), 10-Ruth (vg-ex). Balance: 4 cards excellent, 1 card very good.

Lot 84.  1920 W520 complete set of 20. Very difficult set. Sizes vary and a scan of the entire set is provided. Highlights: 1-Bancroft (ex-mt, o/c), 2-Mathewson (ex, o/c), 8-Wheat (ex), 9-Speaker (ex), 11-Wheat (ex), 13-Ruth (ex, short), 14-Coveleski (ex+), 18-Kelly (ex). Balance: 7 cards excellent, 2 cards very good, 3 cards good.

Lot 85.  1920 W522 complete set of 20. An unusual and very difficult set numbered from 31 to 50. Highlights: 32-Speaker (gd-vg), 33-Wheat (vg-ex), 39-Mathewson (ex, o/c), 40-Bancoft (fair), 43-Kelly (ex), 47-Coveleski (ex), 48-Ruth (vg, o/c), 50-Wheat (vg, trimmed). Balance: 4 cards excellent, 4 cards very good, 1 card good, 3 cards fair.

Lot 86.  W551 set of 10 cards in 5 pairs. Magnificent set. The pairs of Ruth-Cobb, Barnes-Stengel and Johnson-Sisler are pristine. The pairs of Bancroft-Baker and Pipp-Speaker are also mint, but slightly off cut.

Lot 87.  1927 W560 complete set of 64 in 4 sheets of 16. Near mint sheets. The set includes 49 baseball players (Ruth, Gehrig, Johnson, Hornsby, Foxx, etc.), 6 football (Ken strong, Chris Cagle, etc), 3 Boxers (Dempsey, etc) and others (Lindbergh, etc). The sheets includes 12 jokers (Ruth, Dempsey, Foxx, Strong, etc.), which are much rarer than the playing cards. The majority of the existing population of W560’s came from a warehouse find years ago, which included no jokers. The sheets are all near mint, however the centering is close on one side and the bottom of each sheet.

Lot 88.  1928 W565 Complete set of 50 including the 4 baseball players in 2 sheets of 25. A mysterious issue that turned up about twenty years ago. Similar to W560, but consisting of only two sheets (which do not make a complete playing card deck) and much cruder. There is one sheet in black with only one baseball player (Harry Heilmann) and one sheet in red. With three baseball players (Gehrig, Simmons and Lazzeri).
