Lot 12.  1887 “Sketches of the NEW YORK BASE BALL CLUB”. Extremely rare 6 5/8” x 5” 52 page (plus covers) paperbound book featuring full page portraits and biographies of 20 Giant players, a fairly extensive 11 page history of baseball, schedules and ads. Published by Richard Fox, publisher of the Police Gazette on Long Island, New York, The green tinted cover features manager Jim Mutrie and his full page biography is followed by pages for the Giants six Hall of Famers – Roger Connor, James O’Rourke, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe and John Ward. In excellent condition except for some separation at the spine which has been reinforced

Lot 13.  1888 Sketches of the New York and Brooklyn Base Ball Clubs. Richard Fox expanded his 1887 Sketch book to include both New York teams, adding the Brooklyn Club of the American Association. The Giants were National League Champions and Brooklyn finished 2nd in their league. The cover has been changed, featuring an antique woodcut of a game in progress. Once again there is an 11 page history, and inside 20 Giants are featured on individual pages with Manager Mutrie and the same six Hall of Famers that were featured in the preceding year. Seventeen Brooklyn players were featured highlighted by Dave Orr and Bob Carruthers, two players with Hall of Fame credentials. The rarely seen guide has some chipping in the corners and wear on the spine but is otherwise in very nice condition.

Lot 14.  3 Issues 1888 Sketches of the New York and Brooklyn Baseball Club. 3 copies with different colored covers. The contents of the 3 books is identical to the book above. The books are blue-green, yellow and brown. The yellow is the best with two small chips on the front cover, minor chipping elsewhere and otherwise excellent, The blue is nearly as nice with a chip in the lower right going through a few pages and a 1” area of wear at the top of the spine. The third book is the least attractive with wear to the front cover and almost a complete separation. There’s a thin strip of Brown tape visible from the rear which once held the cover together.

Lot 15.  1898 PE4 Cameo Pepsin Gum Pin of Buck Ewing. The first, largest and most prestigious of all the baseball pin sets. Issued just before the turn of the century and contains over 100 different baseball players (and a few teams).  The pin offered here of Buck Ewing is in excellent condition with no chipping and one tiny crack. The original paper backing from the maker Whitehoag and Hoag is near mint.

Lot 16.  1889 N172 Old Judge of Fred Pfeffer, Chicago SGC 60 EX 5. Near perfect photo, clean back, mysterious grade.

Lot 16a.  1887 Old Judge of Pete Browning, Louisville. The original Louisville Slugger and one of the more difficult and sought after Old Judge cards. Beautiful near mint appearance of the front. The card shows some staining and a very light abrasion on the back as well as a very light wrinkle which does not go through to the front. A very tough card!

Lot 17.  N172 Old Judge Tom Loftus, St. Louis Whites. Tough 1888 card. Exceptional quality except for previous owner’s name rubber stamped on rear.

Lot 18.  N172 Old Judge John Morrill, Boston Portrait. Rare 1887 pose. Excellent clarity. Back has slight discoloration from a stamp hinge. Tougher portrait. Very good.
Minimum Bid $750.


Lot 19.  N172 Old Judge Louis Bierbauer and Robert Gamble, Athletics. Double player 1888 card in beautiful condition with regard to photo quality, centering and damage. The name “BERNARD McATEE” has been rubber stamped in red on the otherwise blank back. Bierbauer is the player the Pittsburgh Pirates were named after.

Lot 20.  N172 Old Judge Jack Burdock, Boston Portrait. Very nice and difficult portrait card from 1887 (#0275). Card has some glue marks on the back and a tiny spot of paper loss. The portrait of Burdock was only issued in 1887.

Lot 21.  N172 Old Judge Dan Casey, Philadelphia NL. 1887 card (#080). Gorgeous appearance. Excellent + except for tiny “x” in upper right corner of otherwise blank back.

Lot 22.  N172 Old Judge Silver Flint Portrait, Chicago. Very tough portrait photo. Excellent photo, corner wear and some pencil scribbling on the rear.

Lot 23.  N172 Old Judge Emil Geiss Portrait. Very tough pose issued only in 1887. Round corners, and paste stains and some album remnants on rear.

Lot 24.  N172 Old Judge George McVey, Denver. 1889 card formerly from the collections of Wirt Gammon, Buck Barker and Lew Lipset. The card has an excellent front and a top quality photo. The back has some biographical information on the back.

Lot 25.  N172 Old Judge Al Sanders, Phila. 1888 card in tough dark uniform pose. Front is about excellent, back has small piece of tape and stain at bottom. 
Minimum Bid $500.


Lot 26.  N172 Old Judge Billy Sunday, Pittsburgh. Very popular card featuring the outfielder who become one of America’s most famous evangelists. Beautiful photo, average centering and a piece of an album page adhers to the back.
