Lot 41.  V355 1936 World Wide Gum set of 135 with the 3 key cards SGC graded. A fabulous set! Very rarely offered as a set and don’t recall the last time it was.  The 1936 World Wide Gum, different from the two previous issues by being black and white and by offering original photos, includes two very highly sought after cards. First the Joe DiMaggio rookie card has been known to go for $9,400 in poor-fair condition. Even rarer is the #135-Phil Weintraub card, which for a long time was not known to exist. Earlier checklists of V355 will show it as a 134 card set. In addition, Weintraub carries extra desirability as a player Jewish collectors covet, who is extremely hard to find and has been known to sell for thousands of dollars. Highlights: 1-Dykes (vg), 2-P. Waner (nr mt but short), 6-Vaughan (ex-mt), 7-Terry (ex), 13-Klein (ex), 16-Herman (ex), 19-Dean (vg-ex), 25-Durocher (vg-ex), 34-Dickey (ex), 39-Hoyt (ex-mt), 41-Greenberg (vg), 42-Gehringer (ex+), 43-Goslin (ex-mt), 45-Cochrane (gd), 46-Cronin (vg-ex), 47-Foxx (ex), 51-DiMaggio (SGC 40 VG 3), 53-McCarthy (vg), 55-Cuyler (vg-ex), 56-Gomez (ex), 57-Hartnett (ex-mt), 65-Lindstrom (ex), 73-Manush (ex), 75-Medwick (vg-ex), 77-Simmons (gd-vg), 85-Bottomley (ex), 88-Grove (ex-mt), 93-Haines (ex-mt), 94-Hafey (ex-mt), 96-Gehrig (SGC VG-EX 4), 102-Ruffing (ex+), 107-Frisch (ex), 108-McKechnie (ex-mt), 110-Mack (ex), 113-Appling (ex), 124-Schalk (ex-mt), 129-Maranville (ex-mt), 130-Harris (ex), 131-Lopez (ex),135-Weintraub (SGC 50 VG-EX 4). Winning Bid $25,941.

Lot 42.  1934 Diamond Matchbooks Silver Border set of 199. The first set of baseball match covers was a depression era set with a photo of a player on the cover with crossed bats and a ball in a glove with an accompanying biography. Each subject can be found with 4 border colors. The set is generally listed as a set of 200 with the inclusion of Wes Ferrell, whose existence has never been confirmed. An interesting set since it contains rare images of players not seen in other sets. Several of the more valuable players fall in that cataegory. The high value card in the set is Isidore Goldstein, a Tiger pitcher only briefly in 1932, who is especially desirable for his Jewish ancestry. Other valuable cards include Bill Klem and 2 other umpires, Milt Galatzer, Henry Oano (Hawaiian ancestry) and the obscure Arthur Veltman. The set does include over 20 Hall of Famers including Dean, Ott, Hubbell, etc. The set is in extremely nice condition with only 2 cards missing the striker (Berger and Veltman). All the others carry a very good or excellent appearance and of course have been folded where matchbooks would be folded. The set is presented in 10 pocket plastic sheets.
Winning Bid $2,860.

Lot 43.  1935-6 Diamond Matchbooks set of 156 and an additional 25 variations. A different design featured a white silhouette superimposed on the player bios on the backs of the covers. The variations all contain varieties in the biographical write up indicating fairly clearly that the set was issued over two years. Four of the players, Bejma, Hadley, Herman and Parmalee show distinct differences in poses and Spoher refers to the team as “Bees on one and “Braves” on the other, which are not mentioned in the Standard Catalog list. There are 22 Hall of Famers including Bottomley, Cuyler, Dean, Durocher (2), Frisch, Hartnett (2), Herman (2), Hoyt, Hubbell, Klein (2), Lindstrom, Lombardi, McKechnie, Medwick (2), Ott and L. Waner, P. Waner. Only 3 of the covers are missing the striker (Clifton, Hansen, Parmalee) and 4-5 others have some paper loss in the striker. They covers have the usual creases by the fold and some others display some other creases. Condition is generally very good.
