1934 Diamond Matchbooks Silver Border set of 199.

Lot 42. 1934 Diamond Matchbooks Silver Border set of 199. The first set of baseball match covers was a depression era set with a photo of a player on the cover with crossed bats and a ball in a glove with an accompanying biography. Each subject can be found with 4 border colors. The set is generally listed as a set of 200 with the inclusion of Wes Ferrell, whose existence has never been confirmed. An interesting set since it contains rare images of players not seen in other sets. Several of the more valuable players fall in that cataegory. The high value card in the set is Isidore Goldstein, a Tiger pitcher only briefly in 1932, who is especially desirable for his Jewish ancestry. Other valuable cards include Bill Klem and 2 other umpires, Milt Galatzer, Henry Oano (Hawaiian ancestry) and the obscure Arthur Veltman. The set does include over 20 Hall of Famers including Dean, Ott, Hubbell, etc. The set is in extremely nice condition with only 2 cards missing the striker (Berger and Veltman). All the others carry a very good or excellent appearance and of course have been folded where matchbooks would be folded. The set is presented in 10 pocket plastic sheets.
