College Football Autographs

  4 Lots

Collegiate Hall of Fame autograph collection. John Smith amassed one of, if not the largest second generation autograph collections ever recorded. At one time it is estimated he had over one million autographs from all sports, politics and entertainment. He would write public figures endlessly and send 3 x 5 cards and request they be signed and returned along with any pictures, programs or memorabilia they might be willing to part with. One has to read the length and detail of Smith’s letters to fully appreciate how consuming his collecting passion was. The results were truly spectacular. Offered here are slections from the Smith Collegiate Collection consisting of players in the Hall of Fame. Each 3 x5 is encapsulated by SGC and authenticated by James Spence. The balance of the collection will be offered at a later date or sold privately.

Collegiate Hall of Fame autograph collection

Lot 283.  Ernie Davis. Perhaps the most sought after collegiate Hall of Famer. Davis died of Leukemia at the age of 23 after a remarkable career at Syracuse. Davis signed his name on a blank 3x5 with crossed red lines and beneath wrote “Shirley, My biggest thrill came in the Cotton Bowl.” In that game Davis ran for one touchdown, caught a pass for another, caught two two-point conversion passes and had one interception (he played offense and defense) as Syracuse won the 24th Cotton Bowl 23-14 over Texas in Dallas to clinch the National championship.
Minimum Bid $1,500.

Lot 284.  The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame. Four 3 x5’s, each with one of the legendary Four Horsemen. Named by Grantland Rice during Notre Dame’s undefeated 1922 season. Halfback Jim Crowley signed a blank 3 x 5 “To Percy Good luck Jim Crowly”. Halfback Don C Miller signed a bio card and signed “Don C Miller” and supplied other information in his own hand. Fullback Elmer Layden signed a blank 3 x 5 “Good luck Elmer Layden”. Quarterback Harry Stuhldreher signed his name and filled in his school, position and tenure at Notre Dame in green ink.
Winning Bid $1,210.

Lot 285.  33 of the first 43 Heisman Winners including the first four, Jay Berwanger, Larry Kelley, Clint Frank and Davey O’Brien. Other highlights include Tom Harmon, Frank Sinkwich, Angelo Bertelli, Les Horvath, Blanchard & Davis, Doak Walker, Leon Hart, Vic Janowicz, etc. One other Heisman winner, Ernie Davis, is offered in a separate lot. Thirteen of the 33 are deceased. A complete list of the 33 Heisman winners present is available on request. It will include information of the style of 3x5, the player’s death year and age (if deceased).
Winning Bid $1,210.

Lot 286.  Frank Loria. Frank Loria was a two time All-American Safety at Virginia Tech in 1966 and 1967. He tried to play Professional Football in Canada, failed and came back to coach at Marshall University. He died at the age of 23 in a famous place crash that was immortalized in the movie “We are Marshall”. Unlike Calvin Jones and Ernie Davis who died at a similar age, Loria was a relatively obscure player and his autograph is very rare, possibly among the rarest in the HOF. He was elected to the Collegiate HOF in 1999.
Minimum Bid $500.
