Lot 170.  Collection of 194 Dixie Lids from the 1930’s less the 1937-1938 sets. The earliest and the rarest of all the Dixie Lids. A total of 194 lids, 92 of which have the tabs. 1930 Lily Lids – An innovative predecessor set showing American Shrines – 2 foldover lids (separated) of the Curtis Lee Mansion and Valley Forge (gd); 1930 Dixie Circus (Types A & B) – 1 Type A (#8) and 23 Type “B” (1-24, missing #14), all but 3 with tabs, vg-ex; 1931 Heros of Dixie’s Circus – 42 (of 48) lids, 13 with tabs, Includes #’s 2-3, 5-6, 8-19, 21-34, 36-42, 43, 45-8, average vg-ex; 1931 Aristocrat Ice Cream Presidents – 3 different – Fillmore, McKinley & T. Roosevelt, all with tabs, very good. Among the rarest of all Dixie Lids. 1932 Nature Series series of 24 – 11 lids, 10 with tabs. Includes 3, 8. 10-2, 17-9, 22-24, average vg-ex; 1933 Movie Stars series of 24 – The introduction of larger lids started in 1933. There are 20 of the 24 in small size, 7 with tabs and 4 larger including Gable not in the small. The larger are more difficult and a set is not known. Better names include Durante, Garbo (2 diff.), Hayes, Shearer (2 diff.) The large include Gable, Hayes & Shearer, mostly excellent; 1934 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 17 in small size, 9 with tabs and 2 larger. Better names include Bing Crosby, Buster Crabbe, Ginger Rogers (2 including rare “Mystery card”) and Norma Shearer. Large Lids includes Joan Crawford, average vg-ex; 1935 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 15 in small size, 2 with tabs and 16 larger, 1 with a tab. Better names include Crabbe (poor), Crosby, Harlow, Rogers (fr), Shearer, Loretta Young (all small) and Fred Astaire, Joe E. Brown, Gary Cooper, Crosby, Clark Gable, Harlow, Katherine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, average very good; 1936 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 22 in small size, 18 with tabs and 2 larger, neither with a tab. Better names include Jack Benny, Bill Boyd, Crawford, Crosby, W.C. Fields, Gable, Hoot Gibson, Harlow, Buck Jones, Tom Mix, Rogers, Barbara Stanwyck, Buck Rogers all small and Crawford large, average vg-ex. 1939 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 29 in small size, 28 with tabs and 12 larger, 5 with tabs. Only Richard Greene is missing from the small set. Better names include Boyd, Douglas Fairbanks, Henry Fonda, Cary Grant, Sonja Henie, Tex Ritter (2), Roy Rogers, Sabu all small and Fonda, Henie, Ritter large, average vg-ex.

Lot 171.  1937-1938 Comprehensive grouping of Dixie Lid sets with 17 cards of Athletes among the 84 cards. There are 22 cards (17 small) from B&W 1937’s including 9 with tabs; 24 cards (18 small) from the Wine colored 1937 including 16 with tabs and 38 cards from the 1938 (23 small) and 35 with tabs. 1937 Wine Highlights: Coleman small (no tab, ex), Hartnett small (no tab, ex), Hubbell small (no tab, ex, some paper loss on rear), Medwick small (no tab, vg-ex), Hartnett large (no tab, vg-ex); 1938 B & W series includes 9 cards with tabs. 1937 B & W Highlights: Coleman small (no tab, ex), Hartnett small (tab, gd-vg, ph), Medwick small (no tab, ex), Hartnett large (no tab, ex), Medwick large (tab, ex); The only missing subjects from the 1937’s are Gehringer and Tilden. 1938 series contains 38 cards (23 small)) and 35 with tabs and 7 with original paper from the small series. 1938 Highlights: Feller small (no tab, ex), Moses small (tab, ex), Nagurski (tab, ex), Feller large (tab, ex+- mint), Foxx (tab, ex), Hubbell (tab, ex+-mt), Nagurski (tab, ex+-mt). The only missing subject from the 1938’s is Baugh. Other notable stars in the two years include Hopalong Cassidy (4), Clark Gable, Carole Lombard(3), Gene Autry (2), Gary Cooper (2) and Tex Ritter. The 17 athletes cards include 13 baseball, 2 football, 2 swimming. Also includes a slotted Dixie album from this year.

Lot 172.  Collection of 412 Dixie Lids from 1940-9 with 10 issues of Movie Stars and 3 of World War II subjects. The 412 Lids include an impressive 320 (over 75%) having their original tabs. There are 6 complete sets. 1940 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 23 in small size, 13 with tabs and 23 larger, with 21 tabs. The missing small is present in the large size making a “complete set”. Better names are Maureen O’Hara, Ritter, Ginger & Roy Rogers. Average condition in the small is very good and in the large excellent +; 1941 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 17 in small size, 14 with tabs and 14 larger, with 10 tabs. Better names are Bill Boyd, Betty Grable, Buck Jones & Carole Landis. Average condition in the small is very good and in the large very good-excellent +; 1942 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 32 in small size, 25 with tabs and 27 larger, with 23 tabs. The small set is missing only Tyrone Power, which is present in the large set. Better names are Grable, Grant, Henie, Bob Hope, Ginger & Roy Rogers small and Grant, Henie, Hope, G. Rogers and Ritter large. Average condition in the small is very good-excellent and in the large excellent +; 1943 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 23 in small size, 9 with tabs and 3 larger, with 1 tab. The small set is missing only Elliott-Hayes. Better names are Boyd, now identified as Hopalong Cassidy, Grable, Hope, Mary Martin and Roy Rogers. Average condition in the small is very good-excellent and in the large good-very good. Average condition in the small is very good-excellent and in the large good-very good; 1944 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 18 in small size, 7 with tabs and 4 larger, with 4 tabs. Better names are Grable, Hope, Landis, O’Connor small and Landis large. Average condition in the small is very good-excellent and in the large excellent+; 1945 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 7 in small size, 6 with tabs and 3 larger, with 2 tabs. Better names are Crosby and Gaby Hayes small. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large excellent+; 1946 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 21 in small size, 19 with tabs and 21 larger, with 1 tab. There is also one Extremely rare jumbo Lid of June Haver and John Payne with tab in excellent + condition. Combining the tabs leaves only Rod Cameron missing from a set. Better names are Crosby, Garland, Gregory Peck, Roy Rogers, Esther Williams small and Crosby, Garland, Roy Rogers, John Wayne and Williams large. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large excellent+; 1947 Movie Stars series of 24 – There is a set of 24 in the small size, 23 with tabs and 16 larger, with 12 tabs. Better names are Crosby, Gable, Grable, Hayes, Hope, Gene Kelly, O’Hara and Roy Rogers small and Crosby, Gable, Hope, Kelly and Rogers large. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large very good-excellent; 1948 Movie Stars series of 24 – There is a set of 24 in small size all with tabs and a set of 24 in the large size with all but two with tabs. Better names are Gene Autry, Crosby, Garland, Roy Rogers, Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy in both sizes. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large excellent+ with the Rogers and Scott the two missing the tabs; 1949 Movie Stars series of 24 – There is a set of 24 in small size, 21 with tabs and a near set of 22 larger, with all 22 tabs. Better names include Crosby, Ava Gardner, Peter Lawford, Janet Leigh, R Rogers and Johnny Weismuller in the small and all but Crosby in the large. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large excellent+. In addition there are cards from 3 years of World War II cards in 1941, 1942 and 1944. There are 13 cards from 1941 (3 small, 10 larger) all but one with tabs, 16 small from 1942, all small and all but one with tabs and finally 12 cards (4 small, 8 larger), all with tabs. Condition averages excellent on the small and from fair to excellent on the larger.

Lot 173.  The balance of the Dixie Lid collection from 1950 until its conclusion in 1954 missing the baseball sets, which can be found in the following lot. A total of 150 lids, 126 have their tabs, from the 5 Cowboy and Movie Star sets. 1950 Movie Stars series of 24 – There is a near set of 19 in small size, 18 with tabs and a set of 24 medium size with 17 tabs. Better names include Dale Evans and Roy Rogers in the small and Bing Crosby, Evans, Rogers and Elizabeth Taylor in the Medium. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large excellent+. 1951 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 16 in small size, 14 with tabs and a partial set of 17 medium size with 16 tabs. Better names include Crosby, Betty Grable and Roy Rogers in the small and Grable, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, Rogers and Esther Williams in the Medium. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large averages very good-excellent. 1952 Movie Stars series of 24 – There is a near set of 23 (missing Robert Taylor) in small size, all with tabs and a partial set of 18 medium size all with tabs. 9 have their original paper backing. Better names include Crosby, Dagmar, Gable, Hope, Gene Kelly, Mario Lanza Elizabeth Taylor and John Wayne in the small and Dagmar, Hope, Kelly, Lanza and Taylor in the Medium. Average condition in the small is excellent and in the large averages excellent-mint. 1953 Movie Stars series of 24 – There are 5 in small size, all with tabs and a partial set of 16 medium size all with tabs. Better names include Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, John Wayne in small and Milton Berle, Jane Russell and Red Skelton in large. 1954 Movie Stars series of 24 – This was Dixie’s first full color lid set. There are 10 in medium size, 9 with tabs and a 7 large size all with tabs. In addition the lot includes a 1950 Purtian Ice Cream Lid With Hopalong Cassidy (blank back, mint), 3 Longines Repro Dixie Lids (nr mt-mt), 2 Dixie Elsie Prize Lids from 1958, blank back and nr mint and 8 1963-5 Large Dixie Prize Lids (blank and near mint to mint).

Lot 174.  1952-1954 Baseball Dixie Lids collection of 40 in all sizes. Lids were produced in sets for the first time with baseball players in 1952-54 and baseball players appeared on Lids for the first time since 1938. A breakdown of what’s in the lot from each year follows.
