Lot 49.  D383 Koester’s Bread Card Alex Ferguson, P. N.Y. Americans. A rare and unusual set issued for the 1921 World Series between the Giants and Yankees. The set contains subjects that are usually identified with the E121 set and all Koester’s, at first glance, are blank backed E121’s. The fact is, it is just about impossible to determine if a Giant or Yankees on a blank back “E121” (a W575) is a Koester’s card or a W575. The best assurance is to find a W575 of a Giant or Yankee whose subject and caption does not exist in E121. The offered Alex Ferguson is only known as a blank back pitching pose with the caption “P. New York Americans”, and is certainly a rare Koester’s Bread card. The card has some creasing in the upper right corner. Winning Bid $250.

Lot 50.  D304 General Baking Sam Crawford SGC 20 FAIR 1.5. From the tough and popular Baking set featuring 25 well-known players issued in the 1910 era. Usually found with a Brunner’s Bread back, cards with General Baking on the rear are considerably scarcer. Nicer than the technical card, the card has a light horizontal crease across the middle and a spot of paper loss on the rear. Winning Bid $605.

Lot 51.  D381-1 Gasslers American Maid Bread Grover Cleveland Alexander SGC 20 FAIR 1.5. The first (1975) Sports Collectors Bible listed Charles Deal as the only D381-1 known. It stayed that was for many years until another group was found. The offered Alexander was in that group. Still a very rare type card of a great Hall of Famer. The card has a very nice appearance on the front with a very light crease in the lower right and has 3 pen written initials on the rear. Winning Bid $400.

Lot 52.  D382 Fleischman Bill McKechnie, N.Y. Giants with tab. An excellent + copy of the Hall of Famer who acquired more fame as the Pittsburgh manager. Winning Bid $932.

Lot 53.  1930 Fleer “Whiz-Bang” Gum Lefty Grove. From the recent find of a box of these previously unknown cards. The box consisted of 83 cards from what was an apparent set of 16. Included were 3 different baseball cards Grove, Goslin and Hartnett. Offered here is one of the five Groves known to exist. The card is ex-mt condition. The card has two tiny factory punched slits, which it is suspected, would propel the card through the air. Obviously very rare. Winning Bid $1,331.

Lot 54.  R301 Overland Candy Wrapper Raymond Pepper, St. Louis Browns. Very rare wrapper listed in the ACC as a card set because of the various players illustrated. The offered Pepper is much better than usually seen with only an internal tear to the left of the bio marring it. Minimum Bid $300.

Lot 55.  Three very rare 1934-6 R318 Batter Up Premiums of Charley Gehringer, Pepper Martin & Wes Ferrell. Noted on the flap of a Batter Up High number wrapper, largely unnoticed is the offer “ALL FOR 1 CENT 1. A Large Photo Art Picture 2. A Stand Up Action Picture.... 3. A Big Chew of Quality Gum” We know about the card and the gum, but not the “Large Photo Art Picture” - until now. Incredibly rare newly identified type premium card, which measures 5” x 8”, is on glossy thin stock and has a dark red or maroon color. The back is blank. The offered three premiums are in fair-good condition. I know of 4 others from this very rare issue. They all show the exact same pose as on the R318 Batter Up card. Winning Bid $1,888.

Lot 56.  1951 Royal Pudding Promotional card of Ewell Blackwell. Rare advertising card with wide borders and that reads “This FREE Card Starts YOUR ROYAL STARS Collection. Look on the other side of this card for a signed photo and short life story of Ewell Blackwell. You will find other photos and histories of many more famous Movie and Baseball Stars on the package backs of Royal Puddings and Royal Gelatin Desserts. Use this card to start your exciting collection of ROYAL STARS of Baseball and Movies!" The card is dated 1951 and pre-dates the Royal Pudding set. The card is near mint. Winning Bid $1,710.
