Lot 9. The Bradley Sweater endorsement letters all authenticated by JSA. In the 1920’s the Bradley Sweater Company engaged ten major league baseball players to publicize their line of sweaters. Offered here are the ten type written letters or partial letters of the ten famous (7 HOF’ers) players who sent letters to the Company agreeing to endorse their sweaters. The players are Ty Cobb, Miller Huggins, John McGraw, Clark Griffith, Bill McKechnie, Pat Moran, the Cincinnati Red manager in 1919, who died in 1924 and whose signature is rarely if ever seen, George Sisler, Dave Bancroft, Art Fletcher and Bill Killefer. Six of the letters are full size measuring 11” x 8 ½”.The four which are smaller are Huggins, Bancroft & Fletcher (about 6” x 8 ½”) and Cobb (2 ¾” x 6 ¼”). Each full letter starts “In consideration of your making for the “name of club”, 25 sweaters as selected from our catalog without any cost to the club, you are authorizing to use my signature and the photo of the team wearing Bradley Sweaters in your advertising. “ There are six beautiful ads appearing on the back covers of Baseball Magazine in 1924 (scans available) showing the entire team in matching Bradley sweaters. George Sisler added to his typewritten letter “the use of my signature in your advertising is so in connection with the sweaters as worn by the St. Louis Browns and not as a personal endorsement of your sweaters generally”. It should be noted that the Ty Cobb signature “the original black fountain pen signature has since been enhanced by an unknown hand” as indicated on the JSA COA. An incredible group of signatures, all tied together by a single theme.
