14 D383 Koesters Bread cards.

Lot 195. 14 D383 Koesters Bread cards. A rare and unusual set issued for the 1921 World Series between the Giants and Yankees. The set contains subjects that are usually identified with the E121 set and all Koester’s, at first glance, are blank backed E121’s. The fact is, it is just about impossible to determine if a Giant or Yankees on a blank back “E121” (a W575) is a Koester’s card or a W575. The best assurance is to find a W575 of a Giant or Yankee whose subject and caption does not exist in E121. In the following group of 14, there are 3 cards which meet this criteria, Jesse Barnes, Ed Brown & “Chicken" Hawks. It stands to reason that since these cards came as a group and the likelihood is they were cut from the same sheet they are Koesters. There are differences in the size of the cards as if they were handcut. Group includes Barnes (vg-ex), Brown (excellent), Burns (good), Fewster (excellent), Hawks (ex-mt), Jennings (excellent), Kelly (very good), McGraw (excellent), McNally (excellent), Emil Meusel (gd-vg), Bob Meusel (ex-mt), Nehf (vg-ex), Quinn (vg-ex) and Roth (gd-vg).
