1888 M117 Sporting Times Scorecard with Doggie Miller of Pittsburgh.

Lot 29. 1888 M117 Sporting Times Scorecard with Doggie Miller of Pittsburgh. Sporting Times was a short lived newspaper from the late 1880’s. They issued 4 1/2” x 7 1/4” heavy paper cards of players of the era. Every card known, most of which are in the Spalding collection at the New York Public Library, appears to have the white border trimmed off. It’s probable they were issued that way.The only way to get a card with a white border is when it’s the cover of a scorecard. The offered scorecard showing Miller in one of his N172 Old Judge poses has pre-printed lineups for a game between the Union and Middlebury teams. It is lightly “scored”. The card is in excellent condition and there is a 1” separation at the centerfold. A “trimmed” M117 of Curtis Welch went for $6,275 in our November 207 auction. Winning Bid $3,808.
