Lot 285. Five Real Photo Postcards from the Opening of Forbes Field in 1909. Taken from the stands on June 23, 1909, the new ballpark in Pittsburgh was the first of several new ballparks that were introduced from 1909-1925. The stadium was among the first to be built of concrete and steel. It had a three tier grandstand. The third deck was called the "Crows Nest". The Pirates obviously liked their new park as they won their first World Series there a few months later. Forbes lasted until Three Rivers was built in 1970. The five views offered here show a parade of players before the game, a marching band on the field, the game in progress, and two of fans on the field immediately on the field after the game. The scoreboard can be seen in three of the shots. The cards are all excellent and unused. The cards have simple divided backs with "POST CARD" printed and directly below to the left is CORRESPONDANCE and to the right ADDRESS ONLY.

Lot 286. PC-unc. E & S Christy Mathewson, PSA 6 EX-MT. The nicest postcard from this rare set with cartoon drawings that we've ever seen. Highly graded with a clean back and solid corners. Issued in 1914 when the baseball post card was becoming extinct.

Lot 287. PC Kraemer Art Honus Wagner graded behind bullseye SGC 50 VG/EX 4. Very popular and rare card showing Wagner bent over target in what obviously was a contest of some kind. The card appears to be badly under graded as the corners are sharp, the back is perfectly clean and there are no visible flaws. The Kraemer Art Co. had some advertising pre-printed in the message section of he card and its possible the card was unreasonably downgraded for that.

Lot 288. PC773-4 1908 Detroit Free Press Ty Cobb. From a set of 18 cards featuring the Detroit Tiger team of 1908. Far more difficult than the Topping Cobb or the Rose Company postcard of Cobb.

Lot 289. 1908 Honus Wagner. Real photo postcard with AZO back (arrows pointing up) showing Wagner outside an automobile with another person. Card is unused and the date "1909" is written in pencil on the back.

Lot 291. "On The Sox Bench" Real photo AZO Post card of the pre 1919 White Sox with Eddie Collins & Buck Weaver. Fabulous post card shows the White Sox Bench, Identified on the "Daniels Photo" (inscribed at top) are Mgr. Pants Rowland and Eddie Collins. Directly to the left of Collins, partially hidden is Buck Weaver. To the left of Weaver is probably Swede Risberg. The player to the left, putting on the catcher's gear is in all probability Ray Schalk, and best guess on the player on the right is Jiggs Donohue. The back of the card notes in pencil "Chicago White Sox vs. Henry Greys @ Henry, IL. Henry 3, Sox 2". Some quick research indicates there was a game against the Henry Grays in 1915. It may have been an annual game. The back is clean otherwise. The AZO insignia has the arrows pointing up. Excellent.
