Harry Stovey’s Personal Scrapbook.

Lot 26. Harry Stovey’s Personal Scrapbook. Acquired in the 1980’s from a man named Warren Goff from New Bedford, Massachusetts who was a lifelong personal friend of Stovey and was at one time engaged to his daughter. Stovey (born Harry Stowe) gave many of his artifacts to Goff including the majority of the Kalamazoo Bat Cabinets known in the hobby today. The contents of the scrapbook are in excellent condition, however, the scrapbook itself is not, with all pages and covers loose. The scrapbook was put together during Stovey’s career, from the late 19th century through his days as Fire Chief at New Bedford and his death in 1937. The book is filled with newspaper clippings from Stovey’s career in baseball and subsequently in New Bedford. Highlights of the scrapbook are a cardboard Lifetime National League pass issued to Stovey in mint condition with the original envelope (The pass is loose in the envelope). There is a newspaper clipping of Stovey holding the pass in the book. A wonderful 1936 letter from NL President Ford Frick to Stovey and two letters from Connie Mack (one is secretarial) to Stovey reminiscing on their playing days in the 1880’s. The other was to Stovey’s daughter wishing Stovey good health. There are a few letters from Sportswriter James Hendy, who was active in selecting All Time All Star teams. The clippings include several woodcuts including several obscure teams. Minimum Bid $1,000.
